I’m not spilling gas on my paint unnecessarily. OCD has it’s place but not here ?

While filling up my gas tank, I topped off 2 more clicks after the 1st click. After I pulled out the nozzle, an enormous amount of gas started gushing out the filler neck. If I had been standing right in front of the filler instead of on the side i would have been sprayed with gas.

I’ve been topping off 3 clicks forever with other vehicles and my new F150 is the first vehicle with gas gushing out like that.

How many clicks do you guys do?

Depending on the amount fuel needed, I will use 'full pump' pressure until I think its getting near full then reduce the flow rate to very slow until I hear/feel the click, then one more click after that. Usually that's full....Cheers

As posted earlier I take extreme care to not drip any gas on my paint and use the listen technique when conditions allow. One time the pump was running really slow, even when pinned or hand held on full blast. Since I had entered my grocery store gas savings ID for a one dollar per gallon discount I was determined to wait it out (about 15 minutes!) instead of cutting it off after a couple gallons. The weekly points are only good for one fill up no matter how much fuel is dispensed. Stopping at few gallons would have cost me a bunch!

The attendant came by and I pointed out the slow pump issue. He said the other pumps were running normal and he would shut this one down to be serviced when I was finished. As we were talking it finally got to the top and never stopped. Apparently the low flow rate was not enough to trigger shutoff. I jumped to turn it off as fuel poured over the side of the truck. I immediately rinsed it with the windshield washing squeegee and fluid. When I got home I washed and re-waxed the panel.

My experience across many vehicles is to not rely on auto shut off if you want to ensure zero splash out. On high speed often a little usually spits out. On low it may never even shut off. I never leave the pump during a fill up.

Thanks Old Hat, absolutely hate when those pumps run extremely slow...but when fueling, I never, ever leave a fuel pump on auto and always hand hold the nozzle all the way in while filling, helps with the shut off. Plus, I usually listen to the gas going in. My low flow is not to the point it creeps but thanks for the advice....Cheers.

I too normally hold the nozzle trigger vs using auto clip. But this took 15 minutes! Also, I don't think it would have shut off in hand mode... though I would have stopped it sooner. That was actually my point: at low flow the auto shut off failed!

OP was the truck completely level when you filled it?

On some cars you can put as much as a gallon and a half in after the first click... I've found on the F150 you're done at the first click... like you just proved...
5th gen Town & Country / Grand Caravan you can baby an extra 2.8 gallons into the tank if you're patient enough.
Every Toyota I've owned, and my F150 - after that first click, it's really done, you're just topping off the filler neck.
I forget what I drove that had a return line on the topside of the filler neck, something with emissions and evap I guess. Couldn't have actually been fuel return - but I do remember getting gas in it and it ran really rough for a while.

The evap canister is $380 and the evap pump is $550. But hey, if you can fit another 1/2 gal in the tank overflowing it, It's totally worth it. There is no magic hiding spot in the tank.

I usually just do one or more gentle squeezes at a very low flow rate and when that clicks off or I hear it about to then I’m done.

Click it once - that's fine. Click it twice - that's okay. Click it three times, you're playing with your...

For real though, I am a one-and-done convert. I came from a 77' F150 that I would fill to the brim because I needed all 13 gallons. Then I had my 2007.5 2500 HD that I would click it as many times as I could because that diesel would bubble up and occupy that much needed space for long trips towing. But after I went to a 5G Ranger and now a f150, I learned about these costly issues of overfilling the tank.

On my 2024 i clicked once after it stopped. Literally added .23 cents to top off. 10 min later i got p0144b evap code. I'll never top off my powerboost again.
