Back in the 80’s you could have both ? I remember in the back section of Road & Track and some of the Porsche magazines where they tried to sell these whack ass dually wheels for sports cars. I want to say that one advertisement had them on a ZR-1 as a run flat option.

It looks to me like there is a bigger differene in the construction of different brands of tires, than in the difference between fat and skinny tires of the same brand.

The short version is a larger tire has less pressure on it per square inch, where a smaller tire has more pressure. In theory a wider tire should make no difference in traction in dry weather either, assuming the tires are the same type. In reality the wider tire does stick a little better due to some other reasons, just not as much of an improvement as visuals indicate.

I'm still thinking wider tires are best off-road in most conditions but I see more of the argument for narrower tires... with the narrow tires flexing more I and both having about the same contact patch I wonder what has best gas mileage.

You're building a straw-man out of what I'm saying. I was talking about translating similar concepts, not that all cars needed pizza cutters. The only car I even mentioned was a BRZ, so not sure how the jump was made to Corvette.
I thought 4X4 off road Trucks !!
