Well, I've gotta face the fact that MS support for Win 10 Pro ends this October (yep, it's already 2025! ) and I'm not inclined to run an OS that doesn't get security updates. (grrrr)

Further, the Dell Refurb E6530 laptop that's served me well since January 2014, supporting 2 external monitors and 4 printers / label-makers, will not support Win 11 (grrrr)

There's not a darned thing I need beyond what my stripped-down, 'looks like Win 7', Win 10 Pro provides.

But, it seems I must now learn to deal with Win 11 (grrrrrr)

So, a replacement Dell laptop has been ordered (E5550).

MACOS you say?

I've got a MacBook Pro 14 M1 sitting here, bought April 2022.

Gave it a run for the money, freaking MACOS drives me nuts, no native support for FORScan or Ford Service Manual, don't even go there.

i have 2 laptops
one runs win 10 and the other win 11
the olde r win 10 is missing a piece of hardware to allow win 11 to run on it
even though it has more RAM and 1 tb solid state drive
i may buy a new one....but dammmmmmm
the win 10 is also my forscan computer and back up for the main laptop
both share microsft one drive and each are mirrored in all respects real time vice win 10 and one win 11

new puters are so cheap.......bring back xp

All of my professional career was in civil engineering and working a lot with lawyers on complex document preparation ..... it was a 100% PC world. I tended to follow the OS and applications those offices used for my personal computers. WordPerfect and Lotus for many of those years, finally transitioning to MS Office applications. AutoCad of course, and Primavera Project Planner (aka "P3") for scheduling projects.

Lack of LTS doesn't mean you need to stop leveraging Win10 anytime soon. Heck I have an Alienware (pre Dell aquisition) laptop running NT like a champ. Microsoft is never the entity responsible for securing their OS post delivery anyhow. You get updates and security patches but they are months behind 0-day threats, most free anti-malware apps and minimal firewall settings on your home network will protect more than a "supported" MSFT product will.

All that said, I believe a Mac truly is the way for a few reasons. To be clear I'm not saying OSX is the way. See item 4.

1. Hardware build quality -Zero laptop manufacturers exist who have created a consumer (or even $6k prosumer) laptop that can take a beating like the macbook pro. You already have one per your post, you know exactly what I mean.

2. Lack of repair capability and hardware upgrades on a modern mac is a myth, it just isn't dead simple like it used to be. Onboard (even soldered) memory and HDD can go, now kits exist to go from say 16GB onboard memory to 32+ for dirt cheap, think old school DDR memory cheap. HDD is the same. Did your MMP come with 256 GB SSD? No problem, bump to 2TB SSD for a few hundred.

3. Resale on Macs is solid. Pull up CL or FB and you'll see maybe a 20% drop in value on previous generations unlike all PCs that end up being paperweights, old media servers or your kids first machine because you can't part to let it go for free despite it being only 2 years old with literally zero value given you can just run to walmart and replace it with a better disposable laptop for $350.

4. You can run Windows and the things you'd like via Bootcamp (pre M1) or VMWare fusion or Parallels. Both offer free trials and if you hate OSX who cares, you can stay out of it by switching Parallels from coherence mode to full screen windows. I run parallels on my MBP for software testing in coherence mode so I see IE just like Safari down in my dock. I fire up IE & Edge just like any old app. A minimal instance of Windows (derived from downloaded ISO directly from MSFT) is running behind the scenes but because it isn't bloated nor needed for anything other than specifically what I want to run, there is no lag or performance bottlenecks.

5. OSX is eons more secure and stable. It's a UNIX port. In the last 40 years have you ever heard of anything running amuck on Macs? This used to be a point but it was beat to death in the late 90s. People forget but its true, some 90% of Mac users aren't even running anti-virus.. The argument used to be no bad actors target it due to low numbers, well now hundreds of millions are running this moment yet still no "next big virus sweeping OSX blah blah blah...". Not having to worry ever about it offers peace of mind.

In your case I'd at least give parallels trial a shot on that M1 laptop you have, nothing to lose really.

Moot for me at this point, I'm a week into happy life with the new Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H CPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 GPU, 15.6" FHD, running Win 11 Pro. I ordered direct from Dell, military veteran discount, with minimal 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

I've already upgraded to Crucial 64GB RAM/1TB NVMe SSD purchased from B&H, lots less $ than if installed as OE options from Dell.

Very convenient that the Dell came with Dell-branded utilities pre-installed for cloning the original SSD to a larger SSD, specifically intended for the upgrade I did. Following the documentation freely provided by Dell online the upgrades took about 1 hour, no hitches whatsoever, no OS / software downloads or re-activation required at all. It's nice to work with a manufacturer that actively supports DIY internal upgrades .

For me a much easier transition than I anticipated, I'm immediately comfortable with the system, all of my 'old' peripherals and software are playing nice. No problem using various online resources to guide removal / disabling the Win 11 'features' that I don't care to be burdened with (love my old friend Windows Pro Group Policy Editor).

The MacBook and its associated Mac-specific peripherals are finding homes with much younger relatives raised in that ecosystem.

My MacBook venture is over, only sorta fun while it lasted, No Regrets.

Having continuing fun with the new system ....

Installed a second internal 1TB SSD, moved files / redirected all of my default data 'file save' locations to that, makes discrete backup of data super-easy. Love having a machine that invites such internal hardware upgrades.

Installed my ancient (1999 vintage for Win NT 4.0) version of full CorelDraw 9 suite with all the patches / service packs I'd saved to CDROM, no problem whatsoever, Win 11 runs it seamlessly in compatibility mode. That old program still meets all of my graphics creation / editing needs just swell!

Installed FORScan and tested / proved my preferred USB-connected OBDLink EX works great with a $4 usb A>C adaptor (I'm just more comfortable with a wired connection when running FORScan mods even though I have a Bluetooth OBDLink MX).

Got the Helm Ford Workshop Manual CDROM ISO permanently mounted as a virtual drive, so now run that any time without the external CD drive connected and it's ripping-fast.

Yeah, I know, simple pleasures likely of no interest to anyone, but they're all greatly satisfying for this olde phart , so y'all get to share in that!
