EDIT: Figured it out! See the below post.

I have a 2021 F150 XLT 2.7 2WD with 24k miles. My truck has an almost metal-clicking type sound when driving on the highway.

It seems to happen only at certain speeds. Primarily when going 48-50mph, and also around 35-37mph (and possibly other lower speeds).

It’s really strange. If I go 47, I don’t hear it, and same for 51. It’s just during those exact speeds while maintaining a constant speed. If I’m accelerating or decelerating, I don’t hear it.

If I keep a constant speed, within those ranges, the sound will continue until I change speeds. I thought it could have been associated with the pedal, but even if I use cruise control without touching the pedal, the noise happens.

The noise sounds like it’s coming from in front of or below the driver side dash. I don’t believe it’s a typical plastic dash sound, especially because exact speeds trigger it.

I’m starting to wonder if it’s a noise from underneath the truck.

I also noticed today that when the roads were wet, the noise didn’t seem as prevalent. That may have been a coincidence, but I’m trying to make some sense of it.

I took a video where you can hear the sound. The video picks up the tire noise over it, but you can still hear it in the background. I’ll try and take a better video in the coming days.

Please let me know if you have any ideas. I’ve been searching forums for this issue and haven’t found anything yet.

Have your tires developed an odd wear pattern? Lug nuts all tight?

lugs are tight, and no odd wear pattern that I’ve noticed. Tires are due for rotating.

Still stumped on what this noise is.

I’ll eventually bring it to the dealer when I get some free time.

It seems to be associated with the pedal. It seems to happen when the pedal is pressed just enough to maintain speed. If I push the pedal further or release the pedal, the noise will stop.

I can’t have the only truck doing this.

Set the shifter in manual mode, and run the same speeds in a different transmission gear, basically so you are running the same mph but at a higher or lower engine rpm. This might help you determine if the noise is engine or drive line related.

In the video it almost seems as though the noise if coming from near the dash/windshield...from being in the truck can your ear pin-point a location where it seems like its coming from?

You could very well be hitting a resonate frequency of a heat shield, or HVAC damper door or something...

Thanks. I will try that.

I was listening to it this morning, and I do agree it sounds like it’s coming from behind the dash. It’s hard to describe the noise. I’m going to try and take a better video later today.

Is there something I could physically check for the heat shield or HVAC damper door?

I’m happy to say I figured out what was making the noise. I knew the sound was coming from the driver side dash and looked under the hood in that area. I noticed there was a cable suspended that was missing a nut. I replaced the nut and the noise went away completely!

Glad it was a simple fix.
