Any recommendations for different budgets? At the very least I'd like to do a dedicated sub.

? That looks like a lot of wires. I think I’m going to start with upgrading the stock door speakers
So, without an amp behind your new door speakers you won't see much of a change. For a small upgrade, try a Kicker Key 200.4 that will give you some power to those upgraded speakers. You can get a kit from https://plugnplaykits.com/ to make the wiring much easier.

I went with the stock speakers, and the 200.4 w/ hs10 kit from them. Install took an afternoon because I shoved the key behind the dash, but it was not complicated. Just take your time.

I will probably upgrade all the speakers this spring along with a bit of door sound deadening to take it to the next level.

Yes
The amp is important. I replaced all four door speakers and the powered sub. I got the wiring harness and all speakers and amp from a guy on the forum. He made it easy and was available to help this old guy self install.
Everything is hidden under the rear seat, and there are lots of wires but they all come labeled.
It’s not a hard bass hitting sub but it fills out the listening range for my music. If you only want loud bass look elsewhere.

Plug N Play kit 34 on my truck made a huge difference over the Key 200. Install was simple and done in a couple hours and I added Boom mat and the door hole covers from SGS and used Forscan to set the EQ to flat. Mid bass is exceptional with this set up making a sub not necessary in my opinion. Can’t go wrong with PnP. Hope this helps.
