Sport Mode: 2H vs 4A/4H

Hi everyone,

I have a 2022 PB XLT which does not come with 4A. When I switch to Sport the vehicle remains in 2A with the option to manually change it to 4H.

I understand the higher trim F150's come with 4A and Sport mode switched to 4A rather than staying in 2H. I assume 4A is actually 4H when in Sport mode in normal driving conditions.

Question: is there a difference in performance between Sport 2H and Sport 4A/4H? If I want to get the maximum performance out of my truck in Sport, should I manually switch to 4H when I select Sport mode?

My understanding is that 4H is not for on-pavement dry/daily driving, and that the "A" modes have a limited slip differential that won't wear your tires out quickly and are for daily driving.

Oh I see. So 4A is more akin to AWD than 4WD. I suppose that means that Sport mode in 4A has better handling than 2H. Thanks for the insight!

2H, which drives rear wheels only, will be more power-efficient since it's not engaging the transfer case. 4H adds power to the front wheels, which is good if you're off road, or in snow, etc.

Don’t use 4H unless you are on a very slippery surface such as snow and ice. Not good for your drivetrain and tires.

Sport mode does not add HP... It Remaps your throttle sensitivity and trans tuning.... Mine runs the same 1/4 mile in normal and sport mode

Would not use 4Hi on pavement in sport mode. 4A has a different transfer case to allow continuously varied amounts of power between front and rear, more like an AWD setup. At no point is 4A ever “locked” into 4Hi such as 4Hi would be. It may be a 50/50 torque split at times, but will never keep the wheel speeds from differing front to rear like 4Hi would

4A is a very different transfer case than the transfer case that doesn't have 4A. Perhaps a bit oversimplified, but a 4A transfer case has a clutch and is electronically controlled for how much torque is sent to the front differential.

As a result it is appropriate for even high traction conditions, as well as poor conditions.

Does anyone know if the clutch assembly in the 4A transfer case is a dry clutch or wet clutch?
