When I first picked up my truck the first thing I noticed was the speakers were terrible sounding. I swapped in some Powerbass speakers in all 4 doors and while it improved the highs the bass was absolutely terrible. I read on here the SGS Block off plates made a huge difference in bass so I bought pair for the front just to try out. Well, it just so happens SGS was doing a give away for their Level 3 sound treatment package. Their package consists of Black Hole Mat for the inner door skin and interior door panel, black hole tiles for the outer door skin, and their block off plates. I ended up winning this package and have been anxious to get it all installed, thanks @SoundsGoodStereo. These guys have been super helpful answering all of my questions and they have some awesome tutorial videos for installing everything.
I was extremely doubtful on what this would do in terms of sound. I was somewhat into car audio in the mid 90s but to say a lot has changed since then would be an understatement. We had some awesome weather over the weekend so I jumped straight into the install. It took me between 2-3 hrs per door, the work is not hard but you have to take your time and have patience. The backing on the blackhole tiles is kinda a pain to remove but the SGS install guides show a few tricks. For anyone looking to do this I highly recommend having a second set of hands. They can peel the tiles for you as your applying them, thiswould speed things up tremendously if I had help. They supply you with 36 tiles per door but I think I ended up putting 33 in the front and used 36 in the rear. I was a little cautious when starting on the fronts or else I would have used all 36.
The mat is fairly easy to install and the blackhole material is very user friendly, its easy to cut and very easy to form to your liking. I got better with each door and by the time I finished the final door I felt very comfortable with the process. The blocking plates are very straight forward, I followed their install video. I pre drilled all the holes and left 2 screws in the panel so once I covered the door in mat I could still find the holes. On one door I forgot to put these screws in prior to laying the mat down and it took me a few minutes to find my pre drilled holes. If you follow their install vids you will not have any issues.
I am beyond impressed with the results. My speakers powered off the head unit make enough bass to vibrate my rear view mirror, the difference in sound is night and day. At this point I think I need to add an amp such as the kicker key 200.4 to really improve the sound. I have tons of bass now but the factory EQ is garbage and I think the DSP on the Key would make a HUGE difference. The biggest difference is how quiet the cabin is now, driving down the road the truck so so much quieter, my wife even commented she can tell a huge difference in road noise.
Huge thanks for SGS for hooking me up with quality parts and awesome tutorial videos. For anyone wanting to simply swap speakers I highly suggest starting with the block off plates first! These are fairly inexpensive and really wake up the speakers. I ended up going overboard with their sound treatment package but I have no doubt the block off plates alone would of made a huge difference.
