Can anyone speak to the increase in road/engine noise after removing this thing and what motor you have?

Here's my issue: I have a 5.0, and I specifically remember seeing one on mine, because I remember thinking "wtf kind of skid plate is that?" when I got it back in 21, even though I've read a lot of people with 5.0's saying they don't have them.

So fast forward to 3-4 months ago, I start noticing that my truck is just louder. Specifically, road noise seems worse, and when the truck is lugging in high gear, I can hear a louder/deeper exhaust sound. I got new tires put on because I was due, and that didn't make a particularly big difference in the road noise. So I peek underneath the truck the other day, and notice the diaper is not there. I see no signs that it was torn off. Then it clicked, that I started noticing this after I took it in for an oil-change plus whatever else they do at 20k miles. So I'm thinking they took it off to change the oil or check the transmission or whatever, and forgot to put it back on. But, after reading so many people with 5.0's saying they don't even have them, now I'm wondering If I hallucinated it existing in the first place, and if that's the case, now I'm wondering what the hell is wrong with my truck.

If it was just a road noise increase, or just an exhaust reverb increase, then I'd have something to track down, but since both happened at the same time, this sound dampener missing is what makes sense in my head. None of the road noise is comparable to all of the different transmission/IWE/bearing sounds I've seen videos of, and it's not specific to a speed range or steering direction etc. It just sounds like louder road noise. I was expecting tires to fix the issue, but it didn't fully, and I got Defenders put on, so I would have expected it to disappear if it were my tires.

Anyone have a similar type of experience?

That diaper is also the skid plate used on the FX4. So, perhaps others don’t have it if they don’t have that trim. If you want something there go this route—the raptor skid plate fits.

My 2024 FX4 does not have the diaper. But my 22 FX4 did. The Raptor bas a skid that replaces the diaper. Pretty cheap too.

I have a 3.5 PB, when I took off the "diaper" and replaced with a steel RCI skid plate, there was a noticeable change in engine noise for sure. Not unpleasant, but obvious to my ears.

I’ve had 2 EBs and both had the diapers. Neither of my 5.0s did…2011 XLT or 2023 Lariat.

I do have an FX4. Lack of sound dampening is about the only explanation for what I'm experiencing I think. I also have no idea where else I would have seen a skid plate "diaper" and misremembered it as being on my own truck.

I too thought the noise was a little louder when I installed my Talon Garage skid plates. The difference is barely noticeable to me, but I had no expectation that there would be any difference, so I don't think it is only in my head. I have a Platinum, so that might make the noise difference smaller.

I didn’t think anything about it, but I put a couple coats of spray-in bedliner around mine.

I wonder if that has dampened any sound at all?

I’m really not sure. My thoughts were mostly about corrosion protection……or at least an added layer of protection

I also used some to act as a anti rub on frame where the metal was bolted to frame
