Last time I drove the truck was a week ago. Everything worked perfectly fine.
Started the truck today and noticed that the radio button is grayed out, can't press it. Audio On/Off button doesn't do anything. Volume is working but no sound.
Soft reset, radio is playing for a couple of seconds then goes dark again as if there is no radio.
Shut the truck down, started it back up - same thing: Plays for a few seconds, then stops.
I can play through Android Auto (Installed Apps, or even XM App from the phone, so the speakers are fine, volume control, change between XM on the phone and installed app and stations, etc., but I cannot play AM/FM or even press the Source button. When I "switch" channels on what supposed to be a radio, I see the new channel in the middle cluster, but it just doesn't play.

One interesting thing is - no radio, it is grayed out, I am listening to stream through Android Auto. When I turn the truck off you can see that the radio becomes "available", it is no longer grayed out:

I did not receive any recent update, the trucks keep showing a 'pending' update that will be installed tomorrow, but this update was completed months ago.

Any idea?

If it was my truck, I'd do a factory reset from the sync then apply any updates.
If that didn't work, I'd disconnect negative battery terminal for 10 mins, then reconnect and see if that did something.
How is your antenna? Stock? Maybe something there?

Funny that you mention the antenna. The truck was in the shop Friday (10 days ago) to replace a trim panel which they had to paint. I have a short black antenna that faded in the sun and the body shop adjuster "did something for me" - he painted the antenna black.
It worked perfectly fine the weekend after, then the truck parked until last Sunday.

I don't think it's the antenna though because I can hear clear FM in the first few seconds after starting the truck. Also, if it's the antenna, why can I not hear Sirius XM?
It's like the radio 'function' is disabled, blocked by something. It starts fine, I hear radio for a few seconds and then the audio symbol grays out. After shutting the truck down, as you can see the in the video, it becomes alive for 1 second.
One new thing that I did not have before - when I soft-reset SYNC, I can now hear a short static which I didn't hear before with soft reset.

Below is what my AI said when I fed it this thread. I didn't clean up the formatting. You could probably paste it into Word and it will clean up the links.
Here is the link direct to my AI's answer if you can access it:

### Key Points
- It seems likely that the 2021 Ford F150 radio issue is due to a faulty radio unit or a software glitch, given the symptoms described.
- Research suggests checking the radio fuse (likely fuse 26 in the cabin fuse box) and performing a soft reset as initial steps.
- The evidence leans toward installing any pending software updates, as the user mentioned a pending update scheduled for tomorrow.
- If these steps don’t resolve the issue, the radio unit may need replacement, which could be costly.

### Initial Steps
Start by checking the radio fuse in the cabin fuse box, located on the right-hand side of the passenger footwell. The radio display fuse is typically number 26 for the 2021 F150. If the fuse is blown, replace it with one of the same amperage to see if that fixes the issue. Next, perform a soft reset by pressing and holding the Power and Forward/Right Seek buttons together for 10-15 seconds; this can resolve temporary software glitches without affecting settings.

### Software Updates
Given the user’s mention of a pending update completed months ago but set to install tomorrow, ensure this update is installed as soon as possible. Software updates can fix known issues with the SYNC system, which is common in Ford F150s. Visit [Ford Owner Support](https://www.ford.com/support/vehicle/f150/2021/owner-manuals/) for update instructions.

### Further Action
If the problem persists after these steps, it’s likely the radio unit is faulty. This could require professional diagnosis at a Ford dealership, as replacing the unit can be complex and costly. Given the antenna was recently painted, it’s worth inspecting for any damage, though it seems less likely to be the cause since the radio worked fine initially.

### Unexpected Detail
An interesting observation is that the radio becomes “available” when the truck is turned off, which might indicate a power management issue specific to when the truck is running, adding another layer to consider.

### Survey Note: Detailed Analysis of 2021 Ford F150 Radio Issues

This detailed analysis explores the radio malfunction reported in a 2021 Ford F150, where the radio button is grayed out, the audio on/off button doesn’t work, volume controls show changes but produce no sound, and the radio plays briefly after a soft reset before going dark. The user can play through Android Auto, but AM/FM and source buttons are unresponsive, with channel changes visible in the middle cluster but no sound. The radio becomes “available” when the truck is off, and a short static noise was heard after a recent soft reset. The antenna was painted black 10 days ago, worked fine over the weekend, but the truck was parked until Sunday when the issue started. The user suspects the radio function is disabled or blocked and questions why Sirius XM is also affected if it’s an antenna issue, with a pending software update noted.

#### Background and User Description
The issue description, detailed in the forum post at [F150gen14 Forum](https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/my-21-radio-decided-it-had-enough-stopped-working.35383/#post-621112), includes:
- Radio button grayed out, cannot press; audio on/off button non-functional; volume works but no sound.
- Radio plays for a few seconds post-soft reset, then goes dark; issue persists after restarting the truck.
- Android Auto works fine, with speakers and volume control operational, but AM/FM and source buttons are unresponsive.
- Channel changes visible in the middle cluster, no sound; radio becomes “available” when truck is off, as seen in a video.
- No recent updates, but a pending update (completed months ago, to be installed tomorrow) is noted.
- New observation: short static noise after soft reset, not present before.
- Antenna painted black 10 days ago, worked fine post-painting until Sunday, truck parked until then.

#### Common Issues and Research Findings
Research into 2021 Ford F150 radio problems reveals several common issues, often linked to the SYNC system, software glitches, fuse problems, and hardware failures. Below is a table summarizing key findings from online reports:

| **Issue** | **Description** | **Frequency** | **Potential Fix** |
|-------------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------|---------------------------------------|
| Radio Not Working | No sound, screen black, buttons unresponsive | Common | Soft reset, fuse check, software update |
| SYNC System Glitches | Intermittent audio loss, Android Auto works but radio doesn’t | Frequent | Software update, dealer diagnosis |
| Fuse Blown | Radio fails to power on, fuse may be damaged | Occasional | Replace fuse (e.g., fuse 26 in cabin) |
| Hardware Failure | Radio unit defective, requires replacement | Less common | Professional replacement at dealership |
| Antenna-Related Issues | Poor reception, possibly due to painting or damage | Rare | Inspect antenna, ensure connections |

#### Diagnostic Steps
Given the symptoms, the following steps are recommended:
1. **Fuse Inspection**: Check fuse number 26 in the cabin fuse box, located on the right-hand side of the passenger footwell behind a trim panel, as per [Fuse Box Diagram](https://fuse-box.info/ford/ford-f-150-2021-2022-fuses). If blown, replace with a fuse of the same amperage to prevent further issues.
2. **Soft Reset**: Perform another soft reset by pressing and holding the Power and Forward/Right Seek buttons for 10-15 seconds, as outlined in [Ford Troubleshooting](https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/sync/troubleshooting/how-do-i-perform-a-sync-masterfactory-reset/). This resets the SYNC system without affecting settings.
3. **Software Update**: Given the pending update mentioned, ensure it’s installed tomorrow. Visit [Ford Owner Support](https://www.ford.com/support/vehicle/f150/2021/owner-manuals/) to check for updates using the VIN, as software glitches are common and updates can resolve them.
4. **Antenna Check**: Although the painting likely didn’t cause the issue immediately, inspect the antenna for any damage or loose connections, especially post-painting. Research suggests painting may not significantly affect reception if done correctly, as seen in [Antenna Painting Effects](https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/can-you-spray-paint-an-antenna.65004/), but moisture or corrosion could be a factor.
5. **Dealer Diagnosis**: If the above steps fail, the radio unit may be faulty. Reports indicate hardware failures are less common but possible, with replacement costs varying. Contact a Ford dealership for professional diagnosis, as seen in [Reddit Discussions](https://www.reddit.com/r/f150/comments/q81tp1/2018_f150_screenradio_functions_not_working_tried/).

#### Analysis of Specific Symptoms
- The ability to play through Android Auto suggests the audio system (speakers, amplifiers) is functional, pointing to an issue with the radio tuner or SYNC software for AM/FM signals.
- The radio playing briefly post-reset then going dark indicates a possible initialization failure, potentially software-related or a power supply issue.
- The radio becoming “available” when the truck is off is an interesting detail, suggesting a power management issue when the truck is running, possibly linked to the ignition system.
- The static noise post-reset could indicate an electrical issue, such as a short circuit or faulty component, which warrants further investigation.

#### Consideration of Antenna Painting
The antenna was painted black 10 days ago, and the radio worked fine until Sunday, with the truck parked until then. Research on painting antennas, such as [Solid Signal Blog](https://blog.solidsignal.com/tutorials/can-paint-antenna/), suggests minimal impact on reception if the conductive elements aren’t covered, but moisture ingress during painting or parking could affect performance. Given the timing, it’s less likely the primary cause but worth checking for corrosion or loose connections.

#### Cost and Practical Implications
If the radio unit needs replacement, costs can vary. Online estimates suggest aftermarket units start at around $200-$600, but OEM replacements through dealerships can be higher, often $500-$1000, including labor, as seen in [eBay Listings](https://www.ebay.com/b/Factory-Ford-F150-Car-Radio-In-Dash-Units/39754/bn_7023267244). Given the truck’s age and warranty status, contacting Ford for potential coverage under warranty is advisable.

#### Conclusion
The most likely cause is a faulty radio unit or unresolved software glitch, given the symptoms and common issues. Start with fuse checks and software updates, and if unresolved, seek dealership assistance. The antenna painting is a secondary consideration, possibly contributing but not the primary issue.

Issue resolved, although very random, unrelated to all suggestions.

I did a hard reset yesterday, disconnected the negative for about 20 minutes. It did not solve the problem, neither a remote start that was mentioned by someone on YouTube.
On my way to install front Bilstein 5100 this morning , while stuck in traffic, I plugged a mini OBDII to see if it can give me any info on the battery, as suggested by @fatboywilly . It did not connect to the app for some reason. I thought "maybe I'll turn my phone's Bluetooth OFF and then back ON and the OBDII will connect". The second I turned the Bluetooth OFF, the radio came back to life.
I said "ha!!" :D......changed some channels and sources to make sure it is working normally. I then turned BT ON again - radio immediately went off, same as before, grayed out. BT OFF again, just to make sure - radio works fine. So I figured my phone, which has not been rebooted for a while, must be stuck in some BT loop, probably because of phone apps update. I rebooted the phone, radio works fine, BT ON just to make sure the loop is released and the issue has been resolved.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions.
