I don't know the technology enough to know if this is a stupid question, but do you think it'd be possible to add solar panels for recharging battery/staying on battery only longer? I saw the company that came up solar tonneau covers. Pretty cool.

I think it’s gimmick. I have a 190 watt solar charger on my travel trailer and it will recharge the batteries but will take most of the day

i wonder what power consumption on battery only looks like at different speeds.

There’s not enough square footage to make an appreciable difference. Additionally, the solar panels need to be angled toward the sun for best output. There’s a steep drop in current once the angle departs the ideal and older panel‘s output can drop to zero when just a leaf or bird flying creates a shadow on the panel.

You won’t have the truck long enough to recover the cost. Even in California. A residential rooftop solar system is a better option at this point.
