Just picked up a new to me 2021 Lariat PowerBoost with loads of options, but I don't know if it was ever updated. Can you let me know where I'm at? Also an engineer and general tech geek so not opposed to picking up a Mongoose if my dealer isn't super accommodating.

Last OTA you got was 3.5.2 about 9 months ago. You are one update from full screen carplay/android auto. Your truck is past the bad software that 2021's were known to get stuck on not being able to get updates. The older updates you need are rarely pushed out by Ford. The Mongoose is for sure the way to go and what I recommend as the OTA process will take a looooong time to get you up to date at this point.

Just picked up a new 2023 Platinum ecoboost and I'm not sure if it's running the latest update or not. Can you let me know where I'm at? My VIN is 1FTFW1E89PFD22057.

would you please pull my VIN again. The dealership was supposed to process a few updates while they had the truck this week. I'm curious if they did.

Other than install a new GD module, they did nothing.

Last OTA you got was 6.2.0 today. It got 6.1.0 two weeks earlier. Looks like your truck is actively on the update schedule, so lucky you.

Well, what do we have here? A Lightning?

Totally kidding....I spend time on the Lightning and MME forums helping those guys out, too. Your truck is on Sync 23159 which is only one version (soon to be two versions) behind the latest APIM software. Your truck has not recorded any OTA's yet, but it was built less than 4 months ago, so nothing to be concerned about.

The list below are the modules on your truck with pending updates. Since you're a software engineer by trade, I'll answer your next set of questions now. Yes, they will eventually come OTA. No, there is nothing you can do to force an OTA trigger to be created on Ford's servers for your truck and there is no way to know when you will get an update sent. Yes, you can install them yourself if you are willing to invest in the tools needed to do them yourself.

If you haven't seen the Lightning sister forum to this one, then I suggest you check it out. They have a good group of guys over there, too, and when it comes to Lightning owner specific things, you will find a lot of good info there.

Thank you so much for the reply! Couple of follow up questions.
If one has their VIN enrolled in the early access program, does that change what is available through the system you're pulling from?

Also -- you mentioned I'm one, soon to be two versions behind. I saw one person receive an update that included recategorizing the Sketch app to entertainment. Would that be one full version, or are there subversions?

Also -- if I were to use FORScan to change some values, perhaps I want to enable adaptive headlights, do these values persist through updates?

Also -- I noticed the Mongoose cable is recommended, will one of these also work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235453125576 ?

Okay, truly the final question, if I were to flash one of these module updates, where does the phoning home happen that tells FDRS what versions I am on?

1) The OTA system and FDRS are not directly connected; so yes, someone in the EAP can get an OTA that does not show in FDRS.

2) That would be a full version. Not every APIM update will give you a new Sync version, but only APIM updates can give you a higher Sync version. If you are referring to OTA 6.14.0, then yes....that is the one that once mass released would put you two Sync versions behind.

3) If your truck has synced with the mothership since you made the changes, the OTA package will include the changes you made as the sync makes the changes you made your new as-built data. If the truck has not synced up, then you will have to make the changes again when the update wipes them.

4)The VCM2 is better than a Mongoose, but I'm not sure that is the right one. The listing says IDS; not FDRS. That may be an older one, but I am really not sure. If that is FDRS compatible, that is a helluva deal. If the DIY route is the one you want to take (and I highly endorse it), then compromise elsewhere. The last thing you want is a 3.5 ton paperweight on your driveway over a few hundred dollars.

5) The truck phones home when a) You do a network scan with FDRS, b) when you get sent an OTA and the server interrogator polls your module network or c) whenever the truck magically syncs up with the mothership on its own which I don't know what triggers that to happen.

Okay, follow up question -- could changing values with FORScan unintentionally preclude me from OTAs?

Do not purchase this, it is a Chinese knock off of a Ford VCM. Its basically a cheap odb cable wrapped in a red plastic box to look as if its a Ford Rotunda/Bosch automotive VCM. It will not work with FDRS. Notice there isn't a identification label or serial number on it.

Oh -- and if someone is in EAP, and also enjoys this DIY route, could they accidentally roll back an update provided through an EAP related OTA by trusting the table on FDRS?
