Too bad the dealership won't just donate the USB stick to you if they can't get the update to succeed immediately.
I DON'T blame the dealership if the update doesn't just succeed straight forward. On some trucks that one specific APIM update can be pesky. But the dealerships are unaware of what to do if it becomes challenging.
Many trucks required the patient USB approach to overcome that dilemma. And from what I've seen, it's had a pretty high success rate. Just requires patience.
