I went in for an oil change at the dealer recently. The tech noted a rear differential weepage and their next available appointment for repair is in May.
Does anybody else have a rear differential weepage?
Seen a few reports on leaking pinion seals in the rear diffs. and I wonder if it has anything to do with the throttle pedal vibration many are experiencing as an out of balance driveshaft can cause this.
There are UV dyes that can be used and multicolor kits are used in industrial settings to find out what exactly is leaking when multiple possible sources are present.
Other than AC systems, it’s usually not necessary for automotive applications.
Fluid Film is a lanolin based oil and the gear oil in the differential is likely going to be thicker and darker. Sometimes, different lighting is needed to differentiate between existing oil leaks or applications and fresh stuff. Also, in a dusty environment; gear lube leaks are really good at getting grimy.
My 23 had less than 10K miles when my rear end vibes became noticeable. It even has a low audible note similar to having too much bass and it’s induced vibration. Before I noticed this, I ordered a 2” leveling kit (Teraflex Falcon tow/haul) and scheduled an appointment to ensure Ford wouldn’t blame my actions as to causing the vibes. I did speak with the service manager and had a mechanic drive with me to see if he noticed anything. He noted it was mild, but that these problems are hard to address/fix. He also advocated a leveling kit would not cause what I described. My takeaway is if it cannot be diagnosed quickly they really don’t want to deal with it- too much time/effort.
Fast fwd a few weeks. My leveling kit arrived and installed by someone else with instruction to re-torque everything after 1,000 miles. This is when I noticed the pinion shaft seal leaking. Great.
I had to cancel my appointment due to work and have yet to reschedule. I hope they’ll cover this as I’m now at 13K miles…
