I saw a 2012 Model S on Autotrader for $14k. It showed "AC and fast charging may be reduced" on a dash message, and I don't know if that's normal or if the whole car is hard broke. Still, an EV for moving you, kids, groceries around town is very hard to beat. I feel like my next step in 20 years is a dually superduty and whatever the Aptera is that that point.....min-maxing CAN work really well for predictable needs.

Some model S have free lifetime charging. If charging is screwed up its likely the battery. Rebuilds start at $6k. Not sure how large of a vehicle you want it but Bolt EUVs can be had for ~16k after $4k tax credit (2023 MYs) w/ heated and cooled seats.

My favorite Charlie Munger quote: "Show me the incentive and I'll tell you the outcome."

Universities heavily prioritize publications*average impact factor of journals in which those papers are published, almost to the exclusion of everything else. If a young Assistant or Associate Professor publishes a steady stream of safe papers that broadly agree with the consensus, they are more likely but still far from guaranteed to get tenure. If they spend their entire 5 year "grace period" teaching and then publish one groundbreaking paper which cuts against the prevailing thought, they will be lionized as an underappreciated pioneer 10 years after they have retired following a long career in something else because they were denied tenure and had to find a new path.

I have no idea who important the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide are to the near and medium term temperature of the planet. But citing "scientific consensus" is not convincing to me because the system of peer review and tenure have evolved so that it can ONLY produce consensus. That process is excellent and maintaining sacred dogma, but it is not good for producing models which conform to the observable world. An old friend once told me that the biggest problem in academia today is that young faculty are pushed so hard to publish or perish that it is all that they do, pushing out a steady stream of inoffensive research on the same topic as their dissertation. That process will reliably fill in gaps and crank out details surrounding pre-determined principles, but it is not equipped to challenge the underlying assumptions in a given field or pursue research which cannot be published in 2-4 years MAX.

All I know is my dad’s old business partner rode in my 5.0 today, he now drives a Ford Lightning EV for his daily. After letting the 5.0 sing its praises to 7,000 rpm because I was merging in front of a hot incoming semi he said “ok I’m going back to a 5.0 next truck, I miss this sound too damn much”. I’m glad to report I have helped end someone’s EV experience (that and he said he gets like 170 miles to a full charge in winter) that’s nuts. One more 5.0 sale for 2025 and one less Lightning/ RamCharger

In all seriousness I do hope they continue to improve them, they are getting better and better.
