Something interesting I noticed today. Truck was cold and hadn’t ran in over 24 hours. I unlocked it and went underneath to look for leaks since I just got it back from warranty work yesterday and I noticed that a coolant pump (?) was running under the left hand side close to the transfer case. Grey coloured box with a coolant line going into it. Truck hadn’t been started yet, just unlocked.

Does anyone know why a pump would run when cold and prior to start? Normal? Or is this why our 12v battery drains? I think it’s sort of interesting.

Which side? Only thing I could think of possibly doing something like that is evap/emissions unit. It's on the driver's side about where the driver's seat is attached to the welded frame cross member just aft of the transmission.

Yup, drivers side to the left of the transfer case. Small grey box with a U shaped coolant line running into it. If it’s part of the evap/emissions system you’d think it would only need to run with the engine on.

Those are fuel vapor lines. Never heard it run w/ the truck off, interesting. The canister is the large box, the small one is the pump.

Pump not shown, but the charcoal canister is

Interesting to know it’s for fuel vapor. I thought it was coolant maybe as the line felt like fluid was running through it but I guess it could just be the vibrations from the pump. I’m any case it seems weird that they’d just start running.

I see it now ML3Z-9C111-A

I’d like to know if anyone else has this run when the truck is off. It seems like a source for a battey drain if it’s just operating whenever.

You woke it up when you unlocked it. Otherwise it'd just sleep. I've watched the current draw overnight and at most I saw it eat .4ah (likely talking to ford's servers). Approaching and unlocking the vehicle will consume 3x that amount. Opening it wakes the PCM up and it appears it will run the evap when it does this if needed. This is govt mandated stuff, not ford.

Thanks for the info. Just seems weird as you don’t necessarily go driving every single time you open it and it just as easily stay off until you actually hit that start button.

yup
it comes to semi alive state clicks and whirs in anticipation of a drive
my 21 superduy made owl sounds and little actuator noises behind the led lights
my truck now does same thing, with what i call the "HELLO ROBERT, i am eager to drive today"
setting
it kills me at how much WAKES up just when you need to grab something out of the back seat.
HAL 9000 is way to alert if you know what i mean
