Prevenitive maintenance!! My 2022 Power Boost Lariat has 25,000 miles on it of which about half are from towing a 6500 lb travel trailer. We will be using this set up to drive to and be in Alaska all this summer putting another 10,000 miles on it when we return. Still under warranty.

What maintenance would you do on it before leaving? I’m going to do an oil change and was thinking of using Amsoil or Redline. Also what about flushing and replacing the tranny fluid? I will be replacing the factory tires. Any recommendations on new tires? Thanks

Sounds like a great trip, Have Fun!

Whatever PM you undertake, I just suggest it all be done at least several weeks before departure, not immediately before. Even the most innocuous PM can have a hiccup, a bit of time and miles to ensure all is good and stable before departure on a major trip can be reassuring, IMO.

Just for your consideration.

If you have the max tow package, I would definitely get the rear axle recall taken care of. To be even more proactive, I would take along some spare rear axle bolts, screw extractor set, drill and torque wrench. I think you will be fine not doing anything with the tranny fluid but if it were me I would definitely check the fluid level and all others.

I second that.
Plus - I would probably plan on oil change and tire rotation half way through, especially if you get new tires before the trip.

Bring an oil changing kit with you (oil, oil filter, pan, etc.) so you can change your oil while your there. I've always done roughly 5k oil changes and tow frequently on the weekends. As for tires, I've got the Falken Wildpeaks ATW's and they've been great so far but many other AT's out there that are just as good. I rotate every other oil change so, if it was me, I wouldn't worry with rotating new tires while you are there. Concerning the transmission, I wouldn't touch it since you only have 25k miles.

25 K on present tires have they been bad to you so far.

Go to Ford get some new replacement tires and a oil change. Then Let Ford check it over.

Brake pads if you have been towing a lot???

Unless the truck has a sheared axle bolt, the current recall isn't really much of a recall. They won't do anything preemptively.

However, it's not that hard to shear that factory bolt, if you know what I mean. In fact, just attempting to remove it BEFORE it shears, could possibly shear it. Which if I were fixing to head to Alaska, I admit that I would remove the factory bolt(s) and replace them. If they shear? I then make it Ford's recall problem and get fresh axles. If they don't shear, I get fresh bolts with no wear.

But enough about axles and bolts. I am green with envy. That trip is a bucket list trip!

Envious of your road trip! That trailer and the bed top/shell must be really squeezing your max weight limits, no?

I think that replacing the transmission fluid early is smart, but I have no idea what mileage is best. I did it at about 25-30k. I swapped the rear diff oil at the same interval, and had a Ford Performance cover installed so that its easy to do it myself in the future. Other than that, you'll have 35k miles on your tires in the Alaskan winter. It might be wise to see what tires cost in Anchorage so you can decide if you want to swap tires now and use up your current tires later or maybe get them replaced in Anchorage before you head back south.

It tows and stops great. Also no sway unless it’s really windy but even then it’s vey little. I’m real careful with my weight distribution.

It’s been on my bucket list even before I knew there was such a thing. This will most likely be my one and only trip so lots of tours and sightseeing.

With a diesel engine Red Line motor oils additive mix is far superior to Amsoil (one of the worst at any price). No motor oil that meets the new in 2017 SAE specifications is going to be better than any other such motor oil.

I do use Fram or factory oil filters as I do not trust the ones provided as part of the deal at quick lube place.

One thing I l learned early on was to carry coolant stop leak and a full set of road flares. I had a rock through up by a big rig's tires and it went through my truck's radiator. I was having to pull off the highway every 20 miles to add coolant and then found a stop leak produce being sold at a gas station. I put it in the radiator and no more leaks while I owned the truck and put another 100,000 miles on the engine.

Many people are killed each year while changing tires along the highway. A highway patrol officer advised me to drive off the highway to change a flat tire. I might destroy the tire but it was better than dying.

I have used my 6 road flares on multiple occasions to warn oncoming traffic of an accident ahead. Often after an initial accident there are unattentive drivers who cause a second accident when they drive into the first one.
