Calling all the PB experts.

Im curious to hear opinions on what mileage intervals people do their services on their PowerBoosts?? I am hearing a range of things. A ford service department "strongly" recommends servicing at 5k intervals. But from my understanding the truck determines when servicing is needed based on the onboard oil life monitor?

Im trying to select the Ford Protect maintenance plan that i'd like and how often these services are going to be done will impact what fits my needs.

I do not drive hard miles. I have 4500 miles and 65% oil life remaining. The onboard owners manual even states to follow the service requests that the truck will give you. but some people do them well in advance of those notifications. What are your opinions on that?

Is following the trucks maintenance onboard maintenance schedule notifications sufficient?

I am thinking about getting the 10yr, 125k mile premium maintenance plan with synthetic oil at 7,500 mile intervals. Thoughts on that???

Thank you!!

The oil life monitor can get flaky and have seen it drop to zero a few days after an oil change or refuse to reset for 50-100 miles afterwards as well. There are also others who have had issues with the system as well.

Personally I ignore the oil life monitor and change the oil at 5K with full synthetic like clockwork, using Trip 2 to track the mileage. I also try to take it to the dealer's quick lane oil center so the records are tied to the vin automatically.

Oil is cheap. Engines are not.

Oil changes every 3k - 3.5k miles. Probably overkill these days, but the works package at the dealer near me runs $29.99 - $39-99. I've followed this interval every vehicle i have had and many of them have exceeded 300k miles.

Many will disagree with me and that's okay. Imo, oil changes are cheap insurance.

Best of luck deciding on the esp plan and service intervals.

With conventional oil 3-3.5k changes is still perfectly reasonable.

Running modern full synthetic for 5K miles is just fine. This is even considering the increased chance of fuel dilution that hybrids can suffer from. Especially if not being driven with the ICE running long enough to heat the oil sufficiently to reach temps high enough to boil it out so the PCV can vent it properly.

As an automotive technician, I change the oil on my 3.5EB every 6 months/5,000 miles. In practice this usually means changing my oil after 3,000-4,500 miles. Fuel dilution and soot are big issues with modern GDI engines, and they are the main reasons I stick to a 6 month oil change schedule.

Oil is cheap, but I'm constantly fixing oil leaks, replacing engines, and dealing with internal engine repairs at work because of declined maintenance.

Every 3 k oil change for me due to fuel dilution, and twin turbo situation. Replace engine air filter every other oil change too. But, that’s me and I change it myself. A 80k dollar truck that i plan to keep for a long while. Plus, I’ll be towing a travel trailer.

Thanks to all that have replied! Really appreciate the guidance. Sounds like its pretty unanimous.

If anyone else has their opinions and reasonings I'd love to hear those as well.

Thanks!

I would not buy one of the service plans. I don’t want to be Locked And into having my oil changed every 10 K.

The severe service routine puts us on a 5k interval

Interesting. I like and prefer the idea of paying for my maintenance up front opposed to paying $200 or more every time I go there. The maintenance plan also covers a lot more than just oil changes. I am going to be doing the maintenance at the chosen interval regardless so for me it makes sense to just prepay for it all. But I appreciate your input on it, I had not even considered that thought.

What is the reason for you not wanting to prepay for the maintenance that you will undoubtedly be doing anyways?

My opinion is to follow manufacturers recommendations. These armchair mechanics can waste their money if the wish, their money, their choice; but in 1.5 million miles of driving in 56 years I’ve never had an engine failure or malfunction following the ENGINEERS WHO DESIGNED it’s recommendations. Especially in modern cars with much tighter tolerances and better oils.

Wow, That's a good price.
I just paid $100 for an oil change. Might make me switch back to doing oil changes myself.

$100 🤔. That's a bit out of the price im willing to pay. I hope that's getting you full synthetic. The price I mentioned is for Motorcraft synthetic blend. I've been going to the same dealer since 2017 and getting the same oil since then on all vehicles we own. No oil issues yet.

A full synthetic oil change on an F150 runs about $180 where I work. For context, a full synthetic oil change a Porsche Cayenne runs about $310.

$180 for an f-150? Okay, we'll that's a bit much IMO; although, at a Porsche dealer im not surprised. A close friend has a panamera and while he doesnt miss the $310, he still grumbles everytime he puts up the dough for it. Of coarse, maybe I should be a little more like him ...afterall, he also has a Ferrari.

I don’t trust dealer service techs. They are the most inexperienced and the least trained.

With that being said, in 43 years, I have never had anyone change my oil. I don’t plan on starting now.

My last oil change cost me $97. And that was using the AMSOIL SS and an EA filter.

I can use better quality, materials, and lower cost, than what the dealer can do.
