When/if my 2022 Powerboost comes in I was wondering what others do that may be in my situation. I may be putting low miles on this truck due to new working arrangements from previous decades. I now work from home instead of commuting 35K miles a year. I have always used Mobil 1 and have always had great success with it. However when you drive 35+k miles a year you are under your car changing oil about every other month.

Now I may struggle to drive 5000 a year and probably less. Do you still go by mileage for oil changes or should I use a formula like "XXXX miles or 1 year whatever comes first".

I plan to use a Valvoline Oil Change facility that is in my area and use Valvoline's full synthetic.

Any thoughts or comments will be appreciated.

Yep, manual states you can follow the oil life monitor, but do not exceed 1 year between changes
Thanks for looking Oxford. I will have to look and download a manual before the truck comes in. That could be some good reading. I will probably be on the once a year schedule.

I am running a 21 PB. I would suggest getting an oil sampling pump from Speediagnotix for ~ $35 and pull oil sample at ~ 6 mos and send in for analysis. If you want to run the oil on a time based schedule w/low miles or follow the Ford oil monitor, you risk running bad oil. Testing removes any question about the oil integrity. I was running Ultra Platinum 5w-30 and pulled a sample at ~ 2500 miles. Test results showed the oil was already sheered out of viscosity and so rather than run it the planned 4K or 5k, I dumped it and moved to a different oil which I am hoping has better sheer resistance.

From searching about the topic, oil sheer is VERY common on the 3.5 Ecoboost and very few oils didn't have the issue. Everything I've read made it seem like it sheers down to ~5W-20 fairly quickly, but stabilizes there until changed.

Perhaps, but the issue isn’t a 3.5L issue alone. it’s a forced induction characteristic and it doesn’t matter if it’s a Whipple type or a Turbo type. As well, the viscosity specification is determined by the main bearing clearance, eg, an engine specified with a 10W-40 will have a larger main bearing clearance than the one with a 0W-20 or 5W-30. The question is, what types of oil is better suited to tolerate adverse sheer issues related to forced induction?

That is exactly what my oil analysis showed. Fuel dilution was within spec but oil was below 5w30 viscosity.

Depends if you plan to keep the vehicle or not. If you plan to keep it long term, I do 3-4k Tops for a boosted application and 5k for non boosted applications. I would NOT follow Ford 10k OCI crap. Many many videos from ford techs on youtube showing the affects of these long intervals on any of their engines. Oil is relatively cheap compared to some of the repair work required down the road.

If you don't plan to keep it long term or you leased and will return at the end.. Then follow the vehicles oil life monitor since the problems usually don't show up early in its life.
