I’m wondering what everyone’s plan is on changing the oil pump belt? 100k miles? 150k miles? I’m aware of the “lifetime” lie.

I asked a ford mechanic on how much this would be to replace and was told around $5k.

Just seeing if anyone else has put some thought into this!
500k miles and just because ?

This is a 2.7 which had a belt failure at 155k miles.

Isn’t this the video from the engine that was run dry on oil? It’s cooled by oil so yes, if the sump is dry the belt will overheat and split. Doesn’t matter because you all ready ate the cams and smoked your main bearings with oil starvation. Motor was all ready junk.

This is a motor my buddy pulled at his shop, an Indy shop at that.

Need a lot more details than just a couple random pictures. We don't know the story here if it was run on low or no oil. We don't know what other abuse may have been involved.

I'm still not at all worried about my motor.

I do find it interesting that people think a Kevlar wet belt is some sort of new technology that doesn’t require attention. They’ve been around for decades and definitely still need replacement at regular intervals. No belt should be run past 10yr/100k no matter how much someone wants to believe marketing.

DuPont used to claim the same nonsense 2 decades ago that Ford currently does with its ‘lifetime’ kevlar wet belts. The 1.0 EcoBoost has a 60k interval for it’s wet belt. Yes I understand that a full timing belt with tensioners is different than an oil pump belt, but the oil pump is pretty critical if the belt snaps. Not to mention fuel diluted oil with combustion gases have proven to be the detriment of many wet belt Ford, GM, PSA, and VW engines in Europe (including engines that only use a wet belt for the oil pump). If you like your Coyote, you’ll definitely want to change the belt

DuPont used to claim the nonsense 2 decades ago that Ford currently does with its ‘lifetime’ kevlar wet belts. Then all of the sudden a bunch of VW TDI’s started snapping their fancy DuPont kevlar ‘lifetime’ wet timing belts, and they went back to the conventional service interval. Louder for the people in the back.

If there was a warning or inspection method at a minimum, Id be much happier. 155k miles is a lot, but not close to the 250k mile expectation.

Does the engine need to be pulled in order to change the oil pump belt on a 5.0

Admittedly a chain would have been nice, but the condition of this engine tells a story of neglect and abuse. Oil turns acidic when not changed. The dark red staining on the chains and block is from either extremely overdue oil changes or running hot and low on oil. My 5.4 3V was a light amber when I replaced the timing chains and camphasers at 162k miles. It looked nothing like the inside of this 2.7. That dark staining is extremely dirty/hot oil.

Idk I’m not worried, as someone on another forum put it-Honda has run belt in oil configuration on lawn engines and bikes/all sorts of motors for 30+ years. Nobody ever changes those belts and they just run and run. Like anything it is not fail proof but they are impervious to chemicals and Kevlar reinforced. So far they seem pretty decent as there are a dozen engines on the market using them and that’s only going to grow as emission standards increase.

Yes it will fail with no oil to cool it, but the engine was toast anyway. I think for me age will be the driver on if I replace, 200k miles in 5 years? Probably not worried. 10 years? Ya I might think about replacing as the belt may age out.

I am of the opinion to just buy a Ford ESP for the period of time I own the truck, ends up cheaper than replacing the belt.

Which engines have the wet belt vs a gear drive oil pump?
2.7 and 5.0 for sure have wet belt.
5.0 being a popular motor seems far more likely to fail early if any of them do. Nothing but crickets on these wet belts being any issue. Couple posts of obviously abused motors doesn't make a case for average Joe to worry a bit.

But not the 3.5L Powerboost?
