There has been much discussion on whether doing oil analysis is worth it if you change your oil anyway every 3-4,000 miles. Here's an example of why it makes a difference. I use sample results to tell me when to change oil. In my most recent sample I had the following values that stood out to me and tell me I have a leaking fuel injector.
My assessment is that there is a leaking fuel injector. I base this on these readings:
Fuel % is as high as it's ever been.
Both viscosities are as low as they've ever been.
Flash point is as low as it's ever been.
Ash content has nearly doubled.
Zn is up quite a bit.
Boron is as low as its been for a sample taken 4-5,000 after an oil change.
The key here is had I been just changing the oil without sampling, I'd have never discovered this.
