Coming from another brand where the OEM block heater was a reasonable price, I'm a little surprised how expensive a Ford one is due to the cord. All I see different is the insulation and some clips. Any thoughts on this?

I went by the dealer yesterday to price the parts and see if there was a kit and they ran my VIN and said it should have one already. Gotta double check, but no cord I'm aware of. Were some of these trucks built with the heater and no cord?

My cord was tucked way inside the grill and had a tie wrap around it so it was difficult to see.

No. If it has one, you just have to find the plug!

Really a need? My 90 T-Bird spent a few Christmases in northern WI. Coldest was -15, car started up with not an issue. No slow crank, no turn, turn, turn before firing. Fired up immediately. Ran Mobile ! 5-30. It turned into a line of F-150s that did the same duty (annual trip to WI to be with family) but none had been subjected to that low a temp. Been a few zero days but none below. Fully synthetic in them as well.

Not sure where @MTMan is from, as his location says "Last Best Place". If that's Alaska (The Last Frontier), it gets a wee bit colder there than it does in Wisconsin.

My cord was on the driver's side, in the bumper, behind the license plate bracket. Had to hunt around for it.
