I am pondering putting an NMO mount for a 3.5" antenna(Midland MSTX25) in the middle of the back of my roof. It's more out of sight from passerbys and is up high on my truck for GMRS use. Curious if anyone has done this and what your experience has been? I'm good wtih drilling through my roof. Just curious of any pifalls.

Save yourself from drilling. Check out Bullet Proof Diesel. They make this third brake light mount for NMO antennas in numerous configurations. Single, double, etc. not cheap but very high quality.

Thanks for the suggestion but spending $360 on a bracket is not for me.

And the ground plane isn't as good. What's holding me back is not knowing how to pull down the headliner to know where to drill without hitting something and then being able to feed your coax.

I thought the Bulletproof Diesel was too expensive too, but I ordered one anyway. It really is the best way to mount an antenna high on the roof IMHO.

As for looking to find a drilling location and a route for cables I suggest you take off the light as if you were using a Bulletproof Diesel mount. It will give you an idea what you are up against. Don't forget to check things out with the moon roof completely open.

I have to imagine it's still effective... just not perfect. Would be interesting to see a side by side. Imagine it still performs many times better than a CB.
