It appears that the famous Chevrolet 350 that was replaced in the 2000 timeframe by the 5.3 will be returning in a modernized LT platformed form with the 5.3 going the way of the dinosaurs. For engine gurus the real small block 350 CI did all ready return to production in 2020 for marine and industrial applications from GM. I say good riddance to the 5.3, I never understood the LS love especially in stock form. The bores are too small and they gave up a lot of torque from the small block Chevy platform. It’s nice to see GM moving to classic bore X stroke with the better torque delivery. The 6.2 is being replaced by a half ton aluminum version of the 6.6L V8, but my eyes are on the new 5.7L. A direct injected 5.7 all aluminum will be what the Hemi should have been.

Hopefully dual-injected.
I havent seen any reason for dual injection on my gen5 motors. I’ve had the intake manifold off multiple times for porting and msd etc

75,000 miles on a ltx and a 175k on truck

That could be 400 HP, maybe but more importantly good low end grunt. Hopefully no cylinder deactivation with a pushrod engine I assume. GM needs to make this thing reliable or they will violate more truck GM fans. Seems kind of exciting.

Ford could make the 5.0 a 5.2 with 427 lb ft of torque and 416 HP. 😁

Very cool and very surprising news. Looks like they also plan to keep the turbomax 4cyl and the 3.0 diesel as of now.

That’s interesting. I guarantee it’ll have some sort of cylinder deactivation. Hopefully a more refined version. I wish ford would put the 5.2 in the f150s. That’d be a blast!

Ford might need a little extra bore and punch the 5.0 out to 5.5 with the new V8’s coming down the pipe. Ram is working on an all new Hemi too. Ford has the modernized part down, but is currently displacement limited. Issue is the modular tooling would need to be replaced to get the bigger bore centers. Nothing they can’t do, the 7.3 and 6.8 tooling is all new with much larger centers. Could DOHC something with that Godzilla tooling.

With hybridization we are going to see big cubic inches make an unexpected comeback it seems.

I agree. It’s a weird time for manufacturers. With letting go of their multi million dollar EV plans and trying to find the next big thing. Which we all know is hybrid technology. The powerboost is a perfect start, they should make the powerboost available is the 5.0 also. Ford also needs to mak the damn BAP in a 6.5 foot bed. The next 5 years will be important for automotive for sure.

The 5.3 hasn't made sense for a long time. It is underpowered compared to the competition, gets worse fuel economy, and the cylinder deactivation related issues put a major ding in its reliability track record. Not seeing much for redeeming qualities.

The 5.3 is easily the worst fleet motor I've ever had to deal with. They burn a quart of oil per 12 hour shift, fill the cabin with burned oil smoke when idled and we've had multiple full engine replacements over 200,000 km on each of our Tahoe PPVs. Dealers all say it's a design issue and they can't be idled at all.

Let's hope this new motor is reliable. Good competition results in better trucks for all.

Never understood why GM didn’t put the 5.7 in the trucks back in 1999. Same mpg as the 5.3 and better torque and HP. And then they also had a 4.8 which made no sense especially for a full size truck. I’m sure they will screw it up and put cylinder deactivation on it. The original LS motors from 99-07 would run forever. Once they did 4 cylinder mode that reliability went out the window.

My area uses Explorers almost exclusively. One town chief is a huge GM guy to the point where I'm told he refuses to consider any competitor so he was always buying Tahoes. Two had gone through engines recently. He went to the select board to buy a new cruiser and wanted another Tahoe. They gave him a really hard time about it saying it seems you're the only one in the area that picks these and we're also the only department having regular engine failures in our cruisers.

A lot of the GM loyalists are stuck in the past. I do understand the loyalty from the small block (non LS) and Big Block days, and a lot of those guys are still living there. I LOVE the big block in my boat. Great power/torque, readily available parts, great interchangeability between platforms. However, that GM stuff that is so loved is not what goes into production cars from them these days. You get oil burning and timing chain dropping V6’s and Pushrod bending LT motors, a far cry from the Mouse and Rat motors that carry their reputation.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my GM rat motor :) Peak torque is at about…..idle lol.

My 04 z-71 extended cab went 181 k with zero problems on the motor or transmission. I hope my 23 f-150 does that good. Time will tell. Not sure I could go back to a gas GM truck after the BS they have been pulling with the deception on the motor problems and 10 speed issues. Sure all trucks have growing pain but not like these.

Anything can last that long with replacing parts. 😂😂 I agree, the growing pains of this generation is off the charts.
