My only locking lug nuts story

Leaving the house one morning I opened the passenger door of our Trans Am for my wife. It was then I noticed all lug nuts missing on the front and rear wheels except for the locking nuts! The driver side was untouched.

The car was blocking my other car, and I didn’t have extra nuts. So, I took two nuts off each wheel on the driver side to use on the passenger wheels. With 3 nuts secured on each wheel, I was able to safely move the car out of the way and use the other vehicle.

Gone unnoticed we surely would have lost a wheel while driving. The locking lug nuts may have saved my wheels, and my chivalry and attention saved the day!

The removed lug nuts were gone. While my first suspicion was they wanted the wheels, I can't rule out that their motive may have been for us to have an unfortunate incident/crash. Considering I, like most people, certainly don't regularly check all my wheels before driving it was indeed very fortunate that I saw it.

So many years ago I heard a strange noise at about 3am. Was living in Tampa at the time, north end up in Carrollwood. Went out to the drive and a couple hood rats scattered. Found a few lugs on the driveway and a socket pounded over one of the locking lug nuts.

At that time, I realized that locking lugs just keep the honest people honest. They don’t really deter the punks from stealing.

My truck has 24 locking lugs. You are 100% correct in your assessment. No question they will eventually come off, key or no key. But at least they will have earned it.

They don't steal wheels up here, they just take the whole vehicle; my friends and I stopped using locking lugs many years ago.

You're asking an honest guy here - but most of the stolen vehivles reported here are new - and a lot are trucks and expensive cars. Police suspect through signal boosters that read FOBs from inside the house and the vehicles easily open and start

I'll continue to use wheel locks on all my vehicles. Along with my steering wheel club whenever parking in public. Added protection at minimal cost and effort.
