Unfortunately yes, I didn't even think to give them a look until I saw a post on this forum that they were still using them, which I couldn't believe.
I saw the same post probably, but I was just trying to verify it that someone had it in there hands before I spent the money. Thanks for the tip about the non-marring socket. I recently picked up up a really nice Icon breaker bar at Harbor Freight. They have come a long way from the junk they used to have. They are going up in quality while Craftsman is going the other way (Glad I bought all my Craftsman tools like 30 years ago).

And what I found out by purchasing KMC and XD Wheels. On the warranty page they want you using Gorilla lugs. You guessed it....they make them. So I currently have them and I am not a fan. In the past they rust out too quickly for my liking. I mentioned this before on another post. I actually prefer the Ford performance ones. Whether they're two-piece or not I had one set on three trucks and not a single issue the entire time. By the end they had some scratches on them but still looked good.

Every F150 and Escape I've had for the last decade or so, my first seasonal tire change sees the two piece Ford pretend-a-nuts go into the metal scrap bin, and McGards go on. Probably 7 or 8 vehicles. The two piece ones caught me out once, and there was no way I'd ever go through that grief again. Absolutely worth the upgrade!

Wanna swap out the 2-piece OEM lug nuts.
I am going with the 64073 Bulge cone style due to the increased surface area.

I contacted McGard. Here was their reply for a 2024 F150:

For aluminum wheels:

If you are using the original equipment alloy/aluminum wheels then you would be able to use part numbers 64069 or 64073 in chrome or part numbers 64072 and 64074 in black. These items are 1.639” in overall length and use a 22mm hex socket but they cannot be installed on a steel wheel or they will bottom out on the stud and break.

The chrome 64069 and black 64072 are a straight hex cone seat lug nut with a more narrow design but will have sufficient seating surface to fasten your wheels with no issue.

The chrome 64073 and black 64074 are a bulge cone style lug nut with a wider seating surface more comparable to the original equipment lug nuts.

And for Steel wheels (Not sure any are steel, but anyway)

If you are using the steel wheels the only product we could offer is the longer lug nuts with part numbers 64021 or 64023. They are 1.945” in overall length and use a 21mm hex.

Just a side note.... the lug nuts are torqued to 150ft/lbs...the factory tire iron is a, IMO, a casted piece of crap...
My torque wrench only goes to 125 ft/lbs. Good enough for me !

Thanks for that post @pjc123 your info from McGard confirmed my suspicion about the difference between the chrome 64069 (less expensive) vs 64073 (~double the price for OE spec 'bulge').

Both may 'work', and that that larger bearing-area 'bulge' is an expensive upgrade, perhaps I'm being too cautious, but I agree it's worth it in the long run to exactly match to OE spec.

Are there any quality alternatives to the McGards? I'm wanting to replace the Gorilla spline lugs with some rust free lug nuts.

I'd prefer to spend less than McGard is asking for theirs, but don't mind if the alternatives aren't worth it.

I never found an alternative having
  • the same 'seating area' as OE (true 'large bulge')
  • Lifetime no-rust warranty from a source likely to remain in business
The minor downside is the hex is 22mm instead of the OE 21mm.

Is everyone paying the $169 for 24 lug nuts we need for the trucks for the Mcgard 64073 Bulge cone or is there somewhere to get them cheaper?
