My daily commute is about 7 miles, mostly street driving with some small hills and a bit of freeway mixed in. It takes me 15 min and I usually get 20 mpg on my way in to work in the morning.
Today I realized I forgot my laptop and had to drive back home to get it. This time, on the way back to work, I got 26 mpg! Same route, similar driving style, but 6 more MPG than what I had gotten just a bit earlier. Any ideas on why? I'm thinking the engine being warmed up may have had something to do with it.

You nailed it. Reported mileage improves with miles driven. If I drove 100 miles at 45 mph with my PB it would push 30mpg lol. Unfortunately I'm incapable due to an unusually heavy right foot. It's genetic apparently...

I got an almost identical truck as yours, I average 26.6 MPG with 6964 miles on it. I'm happy with the fuel efficiency of the truck.

The engine being warm does make a big difference and your normal 7 mile commute is likely only long enough that a portion of your drive is with a warm engine. I get better mileage during my 20 mile commute (currently 24.4 mpg) than shorter trips during lunch for instance.

I’ll average about 24mpg until the frustration of the local drivers kicks in…in those moments it drops to about 16! LOL.
My afternoon commute usually has lower mileage for the exact same reason. :ROFLMAO:

While getting to work by 5am can be tough some mornings, the benefit is usually less idiots on the road.:sneaky:

I leave for work at 3am.
Partially to avoid the Toyota Tundra factory morons that all got their licenses from a Cracker Jack Box. (Responsible for totaling my 98 k1500 shortly before getting the F150 delivered)
30min drive and it takes a full 10 miles for the truck to come up to temps.
Convenient as that is the point when I get on the freeway.
I also spend about 90 minutes in my work parking lot reading and just enjoying the "ME" time unecumbered by the dog or the spouse. Allows me to enjoy that first mug of coffee.
My Coyote 4x4 is getting me about 20.5 average between fill-ups. About 5 better than the (repaired) k1500 gets on a good day.

With 25k miles on my PB, my lifetime average is 18.9 mpg! I do envy all of you who get above 22 mpg..

At first I used to wonder if there was something wrong with my truck.. But as I have read more, it seems like the nature of driving makes all the difference.. 90% of my daily driving is on freeways at 75 plus mph..and I suppose my style of driving could be described as brisk..

The few times I drive around on surface streets only, I have clocked 22 to 24 mpg.. Which tells me that it is possible.. But just not with my typical driving! And I have no regrets! This truck is way too much fun to drive ?

100% these trucks achieve peak efficiency when warm. Absolutely no question that’s why it’s better on the second trip

I just passed 10k miles today and at first was fascinated by how fuel efficient my 430hp/570lb.ft. truck can be. I’m now over that and understand whatever mpg I average below 23mpg is mostly on me lol. Drove up into the Blue Ridge Mountains and the PB just owns the road pulling up a grade in cool weather. It’s so strong! V8 Rams and Chevys were downshifting and on the throttle struggling to keep the 75mph. I smiled and leaned into the pedal. Crested the grade doing 95 cool as a cucumber and not even breathing heavy. This truck loves cool mountain air!

I did a mountain drive test a few weeks ago taking my son to and from a soccer game in a mountain community east of San Diego. The truck drove up the mountain with ease. 15 mpg on the way up the mountain and 30 mpg on the way back down. I actually had the ICE shutoff @ 70 mph at one spot going down the hill.

I was proud of myself. I didn’t even check my mpg or drive fast after that. I-26 West into Asheville is a pretty drive and I’ve never been there before. Sport mode and slow after the run up the hill ?

It’s snowed on a mountain top above Asheville NC today! 5700 feet and my 4x4 PB is just so nice ?

Didn’t worry about mileage this trip. Drove how I wanted without regard. Approximately 300lbs of luggage tucked away under the tonneau. Fast on the flats 80+ mph when not in work zones or bottle necks. Idled a bit as usual too. Tried different drive modes in the hills and adjusted tire pressure just getting a feel for how it behaves. Here’s the end result back in my driveway.

It’s not earth shattering by any means, but I do not baby this truck and I’m very happy with 22mpg considering the size and power at my disposal. Just a fabulous trip taking machine. ?
