Hey guys,
I have already ordered my truck (5.0 V8) however it has not been scheduled for production yet and I’m strongly considering changing to the Hybrid motor. I’ve watched various videos on the topic but not sure I’m sold just yet on the MPG increase. I would really appreciate your opinions on hybrid vs 5.0? I would also be curious if anyone else did an ROI on going with the hybrid engine? I’m estimating roughly 18,400 miles at 24 MPG at $3 per gallon as the ROI for the upgrade.

Assuming the PB gets 24 MPG and the 5.0 gets 18 MPG and the 18,400 are annual miles. The breakeven at $3 a gallon would be 3.26 years. The PB would use 766 gallons for a total of $2300. The 5.0 would use 1022 gallons for a total of $3066. The annual difference is $766 and the PB costs $2500 more. $2500/$766 is 3.26 years.

Don’t assume 18 for the 5.0 then. All mileage is based on individual conditions and if you get lower on one engine you are likely going to get lower on another. You should assume 18 and 24 though for those calculations because if your real world is 16 and 22, then it still matters.

All that said, I still wouldn’t get it just for MPG. It has far more power than the 5.0, it’s the only way to get the best version of ProPower since its fed from the battery first so if using it you don’t run the engine as much.

The most important part many miss when comparing engines is what is included on the PB but not on all other engines. The PB includes locking rear axle, the 5.0 doesn’t. The PB includes the 30.6 gallon tank, which is larger than standard (but not the largest). The 5.0 will start with the 26 gallon and going to 36 is another charge. Pretty sure the standard axle on the 5.0 isn’t 3.73, it is for the PB. There’s another charge. The PB includes the heavier duty rear spring kit and axle, and also includes the larger radiator that you normally get through Max Tow.

Once you add all the extras you would need to get with the 5.0 to match the default equipment on the PB, that price difference shrinks even more.
Plus, the PB is just cool. I’ve been loving mine and the other side improvements are even better. If you leave auto stop start on with the 5.0, you lose AC if at a stop and the engine turns off. AC keeps going with the PB even without the engine. Disabling auto stop start on the 5.0 besides hitting the button relies on buying other parts, more cost.

The only reasons to go 5.0 is engine noise if that really is your main concern, and max payload. The PB is a bad choice for getting the highest possible payload, the 3.5TT is generally your best option there though anyway.

Get what you want.... in the end its a truck, if you're concern about MPGs get a small car, prius or tesla. For me the 2500-3000 for the hybrid engine is worth it. I like cool shit and the hybrid comes with all the cool stuff with it. I am getting about 22mpg overall over 4000 miles on mine now.

Thanks guys. I’m not too concerned with the MPH. I do like all the cool features as well. I may go ahead and make the change. Do you think calling the dealer and changing would put me further back in the F150 backlog or would it just be a simple pricing update since I don’t even have a VIN?

I got the powerboost because of the generator and the power. Get what you ultimately want because its your truck.

If you camp, work on job sites, etc yes yes yes, it’s amazing. If you want a ton of power, yes. If your biggest concern is maximizing mpg, not sure it makes that huge of a difference, but I don’t see why anyone doesn’t do the PB.....

Hard to describe, but driving the Powerboost is just a lower stress experience for me. I like the efficiency, and I like the fact that it doesn’t waste gas at lights and doesn’t have the crummy experience of normal start stop.

Plus its gotta be nice having one of the most powerful trucks on the road too.

My vote is for hybrid, I think the start stop crap is just that, but you're only going to see a difference on city mileage, that's where it shines. Now there are two other reasons I like having the larger battery to run: less wasted engine run time if you use the onboard generator or extended duration zone lighting features since the gas engine kicks only when néeded and recharges the hybrid battery with excess power. Crawling through parking lots in all electric is a kick.

Highway mileage isn't any better that the v8 I've been driving as a loaner while my hybrid is in the shop for powerboost issues (see HEV hazard and hybrid transmission problem threads for more info on those of us experiencing hybrid tech woes)

the regular 3.5 ecoboost was a much better feel overall and i still got the powerboost because of the generator. i don't think the fuel efficiency factors into it much for many. extra hp and torque are very nice but i consider it a wash given some of the oddities with the ride.

Powerboost blew away all of my expectations. I use the generator about once every couple weeks. Amazing engineering work went into this. Worth every penny.

I’m at 3,000 miles lie o meter says about 23 MPG combined IF I don’t get those turbos goin. That’s with premium and a tonnue cover too. I’d temper your expectations on fuel savings.
