I am running Gesi UHOs on a set of spd pipes. What information are you looking for?

I drove a 2009 Crewmax tundra for 13 years and 113k. Held it a few extra years waiting for the redesign. It needed almost nothing but brakes, tires and oil changes that entire time. I think I was nursing a water pump leak for a few years when I finally topped it off one last time and took it to the Ford dealer where I spotted my Powerboost. Toyota 5.7 6 speed will in my opinion go down in history as one of the most solid power trains ever made. It behaved like new the day I traded.

Then they did away with it, putting themselves with everyone else in the techy twin turbo category. There is no generator, there is a transmission hump in the rear seat. No flat rear storage. Shrunken interior. Glitchy less than intuitive infotainment system. Not fond of the center console. Slide and recline rear seat gone. Initial quality problems, and doesn't look right without a lift and tires.

It was clear the real engineering energy went into the Tacoma and they didn't try to blow anybody out of the water with the new Tundra because it didn't get them 600k sales per year last time they tried in 2007.

Then like many others dealers were playing games, trying to mark things up, telling me they were so scarce my first test drive would have to be when I took delivery whenever that might be. One would tell me my desired configuration didn't exist, another would tell me they regularly get them allocated that way.

None of that i what i held my 09 those extra years waiting for and why I am now in a Ford. There was a professional review somewhere that echoed my thoughts, that Toyota didn't invest serious effort in breaking the mold with the Gen3 because they likely realized there wouldn't be a corresponding sales payoff.

Preventing a cat failure was my thoughts as well. went with a set of spd 3” pipes that go from the stock manifolds to a gen 3 raptor exhaust. I kept the big ass resonator and ditched the raptor muffler for a dual 3” in dual 3” out magnaflow. It is a true dual set up. Almost too quiet. I have about 5000 miles on this set up on a stage 2 whipple running a e30 Oz tune on a 3.750 pulley. Not the cheapest route to go, but I feel it is a solid set up.

Thoughts on the SPD Alpha cats? I’m looking to do the same. I spoke to SPD and they claim the Alpha cats are a proprietary SPD design that is manufactured in the USA.

I am curious as to why SW headers at 2600 vs 2M fab headers at 900? They both are T304 stainless made in the USA with lifetime warranties and high flow cats.
Don‘t get me wrong the SW headers are great but triple the price great?

If you don’t mind me asking. What option of the SPD Alpha Catted Y-Pipe did you purchase? The Alpha 6” Ceramic +500 Cell EPA for $2,195 or the 6” GESI 85600 G-Sport UHO EPA for $3,995? And how are they holding up since you posted in May that you had them?

A little over a month ago I installed the SPD Alpha Catted Y-Pipe on my 2022 FP/Whipple. I did the swap mainly to try and avoid a CAT issue. I don't beat on my truck and I'm very aware of letting the CATs cool down if I get carried away. I have the factory dual exhaust system.

I did a bunch of research on the GESI CAT, but I read they aren't perfect either. The CAT on the SPD Alpha Catted Y-Pipe has a number engraved on it. Google says it's a Magnaflow CAT, who seems to be involved in making custom CATS for companies. I suspect SPD provided their specs and Magnaflow made it for them.

The install took me about 2 hours on my back in the garage. I jacked up the front end, put a 10" stack of 2x12 blocks under the tires (I don't trust ramps). I removed the transmission crossmember to avoid cutting my stock down pipe. I won't say it's easy, but the pieces all line up perfectly without any binding, forcing or cursing.

Once the install was complete, time to start her up. After the initial startup I could tell the exhaust note changed in a good way; a little louder, a more throaty, deeper tone than before. The instructions tell you to break in the new CATs. Idle for 10 minutes, turn off the engine, let it cool down completely (I waited over night). Finally, drive it easy, keeping the RPM down (I kept from going above 2K RPM) for 5 miles. I could tell immediately the throttle was more responsive. Oh and no CEL or DTC or exhaust leaks.

Do I think the SPD Alpha Catted Y-Pipe is worth it? For me, it's the peace of mind knowing I did "something." The larger diameter piping and decreased cells per square inch (less restrictive) has to be a good thing. I don't have the option to go CAT-less. Their product quality is nice, welds, flanges, V-Band , fit and finish, etc.

Thank you for your response! It was very informative! I just have one question. Since warranties are specific about NOT touching the OEM Factory Cats. Did you wait until the FP warranty period 3Yr/36k was up? Or did you just say f**k it I’m going to install these so my exhaust system can flow and breathe better knowing I won’t “blow” my engine? Because in all likelihood you probably voided the FP Warranty by taking the OEM Factory Cats off. I know for a fact that it says it on Whipple’s Limited Warranty. It states this in the fine print on F.

I did the FP/Whipple install myself so that pretty much says it :) I did contact Whipple support on installing the SPD to see if I need a tune change or anything. They said no, I'll be fine as long as the pipes have a CAT and is factory equivalent.
