Hey all - looked at some threads here that recommended the gorilla black lug nuts for our black rims. I just attempted to install a few of them and every one ended up with some amount of black coming off and showing steel. I installed them with a manual torque wrench to try to prevent this. Thoughts on what I did wrong? Are these not the right gorilla lugs? Picture attached shows one with a small chip as an example.

Also saw a few different suggestions. Spray the inside of the socket with plasti-dip (repeat as needed); put a plastic bag doubled over, over the nut; wrap the nut with masking or electrical tape. All sound like they could work ?‍♂

Thanks. Had the same thought, I was just looking at the following on Amazon. A little more expensive but might be worth the investment

https://www.amazon.com/ARES-59017-5-Piece-2-Inch-Non-Marring-Colored/dp/B08T4KTSXR

What you are looking at on Amazon will do nothing for lugs. It’s covering out side of socket. That would protect rim. As far as what someone else suggested anything you add to lug will make socket not fit correctly. Really not a lot you can do.

Yeah, as has been mentioned, I have the anti marring sockets, but that will only prevent damage to the wheel. Mine were installed with my tires when I had them put on at discount tire and they’ve rotated them twice with no issues (or maybe I just haven’t looked close enough- afraid to now…)

…, Actually currently sitting in the truck waiting for the wife and jumped out to get a pic. Mine look just like yours. Really tough to see unless you are right on top of them. You could try a sharpie if it really bothers you- but not sure what else you could do…;

A little chrome is hard to see vs a solid chrome lug.

Did the Ford performance lugs not get dinged up when installing? Are they a different material or finish?

Nope. Took them off the truck I traded in and installed them on the new truck. I have had them for a year now and they have a couple of nicks, but still look fantastic. Need to use non-marring socket. I bet the nicks I have are from the dealership. I also have their locks.

Non-marring socket won’t do you any good on the lug side though- it’s obviously not coated there.

Maybe I'm not looking at this right. The Amazon link I sent looks to have a coating on both the outside and inside of the socket?

Yeah, this particular set shows a plastic/nylon insert on the inside as well. Not sure it will protect the sides but should protect the caps of the lugs in addition to the rims.

I can’t think of any kind of plastic/polymer coating that’s going to hold up on the high torque end of this equation (inside the well); it’s easy to see how the outside anti-mar coating works- as it’s only in contact when placed on and taken off the lug (no stress)

I guess I’m just skeptical of a coating that’s hard enough not to mar when torquing down the lug, but soft enough not to deform….I suppose it does make sense that the tighter the fit the better- but this is all just my opinion.

Well, if they fit- not sure how it can hurt then I guess, right?
