Looking for some help. Going to do a list form of details. This question has been confusing for some in the past. And it's resulted in no clear answers for me.

Trucks and STX.
But I do have Ford Pass.
Ford Pass has Remote Start feature.
I need/ want Remote Start at home.
But there's no internet to my truck at home.
No cell phones work, etc...
Therefore Remote Start won't work at home.
Remote Start works fine in town.
Remote Start works fine when there's internet.
Can I hook up Ford Pass to my WiFi signal coming from my home??
Or am I out of luck??

Thank you,
Mike

I don't think that FordPass has an issue connecting to the cloud if the phone is on Wi-Fi. So FordPass could theoretically send the remote start command to the cloud. But the cloud can't send the Remote Start command to the truck because the truck can't communicate with the cloud. The truck needs that AT&T cellular connection to be functional.

I take it when you are "in town" the AT&T cellular connection with the truck works as intended.

I live really rural. So rural that I have no terrestrial internet service options like you, but Ironically I have fantastic AT&T cellular service. I actually consider myself fortunate with the Powerboost.

I have the base XL and can confirm that I don’t need WiFi to remote start the truck from FordPass. However I do get cell service on my phone, which I assume means the truck can connect to a cell tower as well

I live in the Cascade Mountain foothills and cannot connect to cell service at home (i’ve tried ATT, Verizon, and now have T-Mobile.). I use cell when out and about, but at home I rely on VOIP to connect my iPhone. My truck wi-fi is connected to the home network. I can remote start through the Ford Pass app and receive OTA updates at home

Yea, but now I'm the sceptic!

You might THINK you got an OTA update where the truck is sitting when you are made aware.

Those files could have been download 8 hours ago in the Walmart parking lot.

OTA files are not downloading over ethernet, according to 99.9% of all reports so far.
(was 100% until 2 posts ago ?)

Question is why would the download occur 8 hours prior but install long after the download? I suppose it depends on the nature of the update and whether the truck has to be stationary, parked and turned off.

I’d like Ford to confirm that updates only occur when connected to Cell and not wi-fi.

You aren't alone wanting Ford to clarify.
Heck, it's their doing that anyone even thought connecting to Wi-Fi had anything to do with OTA.

I WANT Ford to enable ethernet OTA.
All the necessary infrastructure is present. So there IS a reason they haven't.

While they are clarifying, maybe they can tell us that too? :)

The way Ford OTA's work is still mostly a mystery to us. He is right, though.
Look at the update log for my truck and how it received and installed 4.2.2 yesterday. The OTA trigger was created at 1:43pm. The first file download started at 4:04pm and the last file was downloaded at 4:12pm. I clocked out of work yesterday at 6:17pm. Gathered my stuff, and walked down the street to where I was parked. The files were downloaded and ready to install, but until I started my truck, drove it home and parked it, the update didn't actually install. Based on my short commute and traffic, 6:24pm is when I started my truck, and 15 minutes later at 6:39pm is when I got home, parked it and locked it to go inside my house. 7 minutes later, my truck was on 4.2.2.

So, it is possible your truck downloaded the files, kept them in queue, and installed after the fact when you were home.

No sir, STX so no fob option. Thats what makes it painful. I dont care to remote start when I am in town. Early mornings would be nice in the winter though. Unless I'm missing something...

Some also use the Start-X kit which will work with your existing key fob (you press a series of lock/unlock buttons to start it. No auto shutoff though.

Wonder if battery charge was part of the equation?

Ford accessories still offers the old fashioned remote start system for $150 or something. I’ve thought about ordering it, but haven’t further pursued it because I haven’t had any issues with remote start since the several OTA updates I got in early April.

When an update fails due to low SOC, PTS will clearly tell you that is the reason the update failed.
