Does anyone else think the 10 spd transmission just plain sucks?

I guess I got lucky and they built mine to work OK. I don't have any problems with my 10 speed in the Lariat.

My last Ford truck I bought new was a 1997 F250 LD (a heavy duty 7 lugnut new bodystyle F150) with a Triton 5.4 L V8 with an E04D transmission. That transmission took forever to downshift and would "chug and shudder" at certain speeds ( drivetrain surges with a strange pattern at like 38 mph) that was only improved by changing transmission fluid often. The coolest thing was the remote mounted oil filter behind front bumper. I don't think it ever got over 12 mpg. I drove my new powerboost Lariat over Mt Hood pass over to central Oregon for a few days getaway. Just got back yesterday and my current trip mileage for the one way return trip was 27.1 mpg! I started watching the turbo boost gauge and use the +/- buttons in D to remove top gears whenever driving uphill to reduce boost, then add 8,9,10 as needed until no boost needed and back to 10. I love this transmission, especially with ability to temporarily remove upper gears. Truck only has 1,800 miles and was clunky for the first 700 or so miles. I drive it in normal most of the time and only drive it hard in sport just occasionally as I want it to shift smooth and not get used to hard driving. I attached dash pic when we arrived home. Was doing 65 or so for a good part of trip before slow towns and slow traffic made us slow up.

- Appreciably slow down shifts when "stomping" the pedal to accelerate while at speed (50 kph)
- Lunging forward in lower gears
- When going up a small ramp from a flat surface and stopping before a gate (like in a parkade) truck will shift from 1-2 and then when it realizes you are stopping at the gate, will clunk and jolt back into 1

...comparing it to my old Toyota 5 spd...well, there is no comparison.

Anyone else frustrated by moving from a buttery smoothe 5 spd to this?
Or just me?

We took delivery of our '21 PowerBoost in FEB which now has over 7,000 miles on it. We have had no issues with the 10 speed transmission. It shifts smoothly going either up or down. We regularly manually downshift in lieu of braking & appreciate the response when doing so.

Honestly my first 1000 miles the shifting was a bit rough/weird at times but haven't had any issues since then. Downshifting was quick and acceleration was very effective when passing other vehicles .

There's about 8 different shift strategies in my truck. I admit that the ones that are way too dedicated to fuel efficiency are pretty unpolished and a poor reflection of just how good this transmission can be.

My previous truck had a GearHead tune on it MOSTLY for his ability to dial the transmission into shear perfection, for my taste anyway.

So called "Sport" mode is the only oem shift strategy that gets close to using the 10-speed as a 10-speed. Far less indecisive and the truck doesn't fall on its face skipping 2nd. But most folks have an aversion to using "Sport" because of the power of suggestion.

You can drive a Porsche or Corvette gently and they are very civilized. Same with the Ecoboost F150. Sport Mode driven casually is really a great truck! Too bad Ford gimps EV miles on the Powerboost in that mode. Absolutely unnecessary.
So let me ask you about SPORT mode, when I have tried it, goes into 4H, is this correct? Not sure how that is a sport mode, all my other vehicles sport meant crisper shifts and better throttle response.

It DOES go into 4A, if you have a 4A transfer case. Are you sure it goes into 4H? I would have thought on typical tarmac driving that would be a no-no.

By the way, turning on 4A with Sport Mode is new to the 2021. Or at least it didn't do so on my 2018.

Also, while I love 4A in the rain or other traction reduced situations, I immediately turn 4A off when I go to Sport mode in good weather. Mostly because it hurts fuel mileage and driving leisurely, 4A is a waste of rolling resistance and drivetrain power requirements.

I was actually surprised the first time I saw that Ford decided to add 4A as default with Sport Mode. I'd undo that if I could.

Only issue I have is vibration in 9th and 10th gears when trying to pass someone (under load) anyone else?
I have noticed a vibration also and I think it is the actual engine cylinders firing when lugging in overdrive gears. The reason I say that is my 2004 Dodge Ram with 5.9L Cummins would have that same phenomenon when I started climbing long hill at freeway speed and automatic trans had torque converter locked and rpms were dropping and I could feel pulses of power from engine until it downshifted or unlocked converter and engine was in a higher happier rpm. This is just my hypothesis as it only seems to be noticeable when engine is starting to lug in highest gears. It tells me time to press - button and take away 10th, 9th, etc gear or until road levels out or drops and then use + to get back all gears. Works great for me. Get to play with some buttons to help mileage by avoiding extra gas sucking boost from turbos unless power truly requested......lol.

^^^^ Absolutely the best way to avoid the over aggressive reach for overdrive and the reluctance to downshift in Fords Normal and Eco 10r80 shifting strategy.

It's not quite as bad in some of the "work" modes though. This motor is a whole different beast above 2000 rpms than it is below it. It spoils us with its diesel like low end torque and we are reluctant to take over manually when it is actually a nicer way to treat it.

Love my ten speed. Only thing I like more about my f150 than the 10 speed is the ecoboost engine.

Mine did that when I picked up it at the dealer with 12 miles on the OD. Now at 1000+ miles it's gone.

I have just over 2,000 miles on my July 2021 job#2 build, 502a Lariat Powerboost 4x4 it shifts just fine after learning me in the first couple hundred miles.. Very pleased with it overall including the 25 mpg mixed city/hwy.
