I noticed the thread on Mongoose says you need a battery maintainer, but I don't see this requirement for For scan. Is it because FORscan operations are much faster or is there something inherently more safe in how For can operates?

What you probably saw was saying that you need to hook up to your battery charger while using foreskin or your battery will be drained.

If all you're making are some simple config changes with FORScan, no battery power supply is needed. It is only needed for module programming and even then, just the ones that takes a long time to do.
