I've got a 21 that here in the last few months I've noticed the console lid start to rattle just a little bit. I haven't messed with it too much, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen to them. Seems like it's coming from the release handle area maybe. Other than the A-pillar thing, this truck has been pretty quite in terms of rattling, but this one is starting to get on my nerves. Anyone else experience this?

I’ve had this happen and currently my passenger side platinum decorative trim is squeaking.

For the console lid, there are rubber feet on the bottom to help stabilize the lid when closed, verify you have both rubber feet on each front corner. I was missing one of the rubber feet so the lid was rattling. I had to find the feet but don’t remember where I found one.

I did a better assessment of things. So it doesn't appear to be anything to do with the tightness of the lid closing. The rubber feet are still there. The handle itself seems like it's got some internal rattling going on. If I lock the console, it seems like it tightens up the handle mechanism a little bit and keeps it from rattling as badly. Not really sure how to address this one. It's more complicated than the typical piece of trim gap etc needing some padding.

Oh wow, that is certainly more complicated. I wonder if it’s possible to remove the latch and open it up to see if something is broken or for a way to adjust it some how.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

**UPDATE**

Ok I solved it. So If your console lid starts making an ungodly creaking/rattling noise that seems to almost defy physics, hopefully this will be helpful.

Basically, the latches (or mine at least) make a creaking/groaning sound when they're very slightly pressed in and out (im talking like half a centimeter), and even minimal side-to-side play in the lid hinge is enough for this to happen with the lid closed. Putting some felt tape in the latch catch holes, so that there's no plastic on plastic contact between the latches and the console solves the issue, because 99.9999% of the sound comes from the console amplifying it. On their own with the lid up, the noise the latches make is so quiet that I didn't even hear it at first.

Longer version if anyone is interested:

I was a little baffled by this initially, because while I could tell the sound had something to do with the handle/latch mechanism, and the sound seemed to be coming directly from the lid itself. I couldn't really pinpoint it or trigger it consistently. I couldn't seem to trigger it at all with the lid open, and basically the only way I could reproduce the sound in any kind of way, was pushing on the lid from weird angles while it was closed, or trying to wiggle it from side to side, but even those things only worked like 70% of the time. Driving down the road, I could usually get it to stop making noise by leaning on the lid at the right angle, but I had to be leaning on it juuust right. I'm generally pretty mechanically inclined, so being stumped by something as simple as a console lid was starting to make me feel kinda stupid.

So I went ahead and ordered some felt tape after I made the original post, thinking maybe if I padded things up enough, it might at least reduce it some. In my head it was something in the lid or the handle that was creaking/shaking, so I wasn't sure how felt tape was going to solve much since it didn't seem like typical plastic-on-plastic rattling. I figured I'd probably just end up having to dissasemble or replace the handle or something along those lines. However, by sheer luck, when the tape came in and I was looking the lid and console over for any place I might could put some felt, I just so happened to barely depress one of the latches, and even though it was super quiet, i immediately recognized the sound and everything suddenly made sense.

The thing I'm not 100% clear on, is whether the latches developed the noise over time from the constant bobbing in and out, or if the hinge loosened up enough over time to start moving the latches enough to make the noise. I tend to lean on my console lid when I drive, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the hinge, but it also doesn't seem particularly loose either. I'd have to check out a new truck to know for sure. I guess it also isn't terribly important since the fix is simple enough.
