This morning I went to start my truck, F150 Platinum 3.5 Ecoboost and, as I pressed the start button, I was greeted by a loud “pop”, then a series of warnings on the dash. Then lights flashing and a heartbeat like sound from the radio. Thinking it could be a battery issue, I disconnected the negative from the battery (to stop the sound) and attached a trickle charger which, after just a few minutes, showed the battery was charged. Tried it again with essentially the same result. And then there was nothing.

Don‘t even get me started on “Roadside Assistance.” After five hours and many calls, the tow driver showed up and told me he couldn’t deal with it since it was in park. Truck is still here.

Under the steering column is a rectangular door. Inside the door is the park release. I just had my Powerboost towed (well a month ago l)

Did you hear the pop the second time?

Just because the battery shows that it is charged, doesn't mean it is charged. Oftentimes a bad battery will show a high 'surface charge' after charging but when you apply load it immediately drops to 9 or 10V.

There's supposed to be an emergency procedure to enter neutral with the battery disconnected but with the electric parking brakes, I don't know how that is supposed to work too. I don't see why all tow companies use flatbed trucks these days for service calls.

I use this plug in voltage meter to test batteries, it's good to plug it in every once in a while to see the voltage drop at startup, which is a better measurement of battery condition than just the resting voltage.

so you have a dead truck and a dead tow guy. They can tow pretty much anything, he/she does not know how to tow.

Yeah, I think he just didn’t want to work. Makes me wonder why the useless roadside assistance has him on the list.

Definitely sounds like a bad battery. Call roadside again and have it in neutral before they get there. Or jump it and drive it to a dealer. Batteries are usually covered under 12 months and 12,000 miles

Thank you. Pretty frustrating because the state liquor store had vodka at 20% off today and I couldn’t go! After having other Ford tucks I never thought I’d need a backup vehicle for when it’s in the shop.

I don’t recall a second loud pop.

Now you need to double the order.

I kept my old Navigator just because of the poorly named manufacturing phenomenon of 'infant mortality,' which is the shit that breaks right off the bat. Which is even more likely for new model year vehicles.

Just yesterday, my navigation screen went blank for the second time right as I hit a bump on a highway on ramp :/

Bit of a shot in the dark but sounds like could be a switching device blew.

when an IGBT or MOSFET blows it sounds like the crack of a whip or 20 gauge shotgun shell going off

Certainly a possibility. Not quite as loud a a shotgun but that’s a pretty good description.

I’ve been stewing all evening. While I like the truck, I also had to have a headlight assembly replaced a couple months ago and I’m pretty convinced that the truck is a mishmash of technology that no one understands. With the failure of the inept roadside assistance, maybe I need to unload this and switch brands.

Just don’t know what to do.☹

Do you have a obd 2 scanner? Might be worth it (or if you know someone that has one) to see if it threw any codes

if you don’t have one check out “scangauge” on Amazon. Mine has bailed me out a bunch of times

for a new model year I am kind of expecting to have some minor issues that’ll get fixed under warranty. Generally my dealer has taken care of everything, might be worth giving yours a call in the morning maybe they’ll send someone over

regarding other brands a buddy of mine has a ram and they recently did an over the air update that caused his truck a pile of problems, I think we’re all in the same boat!

I do. Got one when the headlight error occurred but didn’t try it today. I figured since everything is stone cold dead i wouldn’t work.

The dealer has been responsive and was expecting it to be delivered today. I had opened a case with Customer Care for the headlight issue and, while they were pretty useless, they gave me the extended warranty free of charge for having to wait for the part. By the way, the headlights still worked, it just threw a warning every time I started the truck.

And I’m sure issues are happening with each brand. I just have never experienced this on a new vehicle.

An update without really explaining what happened. I’ve been waiting twenty hours now for “Roadside Assistance.” Just got off the phone with one of their agent-apologists who suggested I call a tow truck myself.

Getting angrier by the minute. I paid $70k + for what?

Update: Roadside assist never showed so I had to call one myself. Jumped it and everything seemed fine but it’s going to the dealer just in case.

Ford should be ashamed. Terrible customer service and that’s coming from a Ford stockholder.
