I guess this can go under General. I didn’t do any searching for crash related threads but I thought I’d mention mine and update on the progress.

36yr old woman plowed into the back of my new 2025 KR with less than 5k miles yesterday.

I was stopped on a heavy traveled two lane where traffic had slowed due to construction painting stripes on the road after new pavement.
I make it a habit to keep at least a truck length in front of me whenever I’m stopped in traffic, it paid off.

I’m also conscious of checking my rear view mirrors and could see a Jeep Cherokee was moving to fast to stop, besides the appropriate cuss words I turned my wheel to get out of the way while still looking in my mirror. I could see she clearly wasn’t going to stop so I gripped the wheel and stood on the brakes.
Afterthought was it might have been better to accelerate but spit seconds is not much time.
Bam
She rammed my rear end and I never heard any tire screeching.

Things went black for a minute but thankfully I didn’t hit the family in a Corolla that was in front.

Traffic started moving and the Cherokee was 20-30’ behind me.
Gathering my senses I looked back and the woman was out of her vehicle checking the damage and heading my way.

First thing she said was “I wasn’t on my phone” “are you okay?”
I was and asked if she was hurt. Later both her legs below her knees were bruised. I was just shaken.

Cops came and she’s legal with insurance. Awaiting her adjuster today to evaluate my damages. I’m pretty sure her Cherokee is totaled.

I think the truck held up pretty good. Looks like the bed is wasted and a little cab damage. Topper I think is good once I get off the twisted bed. Drove home fine with idiot lights reflecting the mashed rear end.

Looks like frame damage. New bed side and bed floor, so probably a new bed, etc. I bet this is at least $15K in damage.

You said that you "went black." Concussion symptoms can be delayed. Watch for headaches and light sensitivity. Maybe check with your doctor.

Yea, dealing with an accident that I think was the other driver's fault but they claim that I am at fault. So both insurance companies are haggling it out. Pretty slow. Might call a lawyer to try to resolve things. Involves my Civic, though, so not apropos here.

I am sorry you had this experience. Thankfully, everyone went home after the accident. Blacked out...that sounds like a good reason to make an appointment with a doctor. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and repair.

Glad your okay.Definately frame damage.I had a Silverado years ago and got rear ended just like that.In your pick it’s looks like where the bed meets the cab the top of the bed is pushed up against the cab and bottom of bed isn’t.Samething happened to my truck frame was bent and when they fixed it and I got it back I didn’t notice for a little while but I was parked one day and walking up to the truck from the back the back right corner was up higher then the left side. They never straightened the frame right but was my fault for not looking it over well enough but it was a lease and I turned it in.If you bought your truck make sure to get finished value because that will end up on carfax and that will be a pretty big hit on value of your truck.

Glad to hear everyone is ok. I don’t think they can just buff that out. Like others have said, get checked out. Headaches, nausea, light headed, blurry vision, even just a little, get checked out.

Very similar accident. I was a new owner of a 2007 F-250 CC all black Harley Edition with the fancy ghost flames, the works. Heading into work like any normal morning. Heavy traffic on a 50 mph road with lots of traffic lights. I was the last vehicle in the line at a stop light. Conscious of my mirrors too, they said it all. A white Ram 1500 barreling at me, saw the back of the woman’s head when she plowed into me.

Remember, your internals are floating in your body, including your noodle. A quick, abrupt movement causes our organs to shift until they hit something, like your skull. Then they shift back again, 2 unintentional movement's.

My son was recently in an accident where a women driving a mini van failed to stop and totaled my sons F-150. The mini van was sighted and had insurance (what a surprise). She had State Farm as well. The entire process was handled very well. Since it was totaled we had to haggle a little over the payout. It worked out in the end though.

Explain “finished value” please. The difference between wrecked and unwrecked?

Thank you all for your concerns. I’ve been alert to any “unusualness” and haven’t noticed anything, brain related, chest and shoulders a little sore and that’s about it. Had I not prepared for the impact I believe things would be a lot different.
Airbags saved the woman’s life I’m sure.

I had a mower in the back and for the first time I didn’t fold the handle so the topper window was open. Had it been closed it would’ve most likely shattered. One side, the left wouldn’t close. Inside window next to cab had popped open.

I took the topper off and the rear door closed properly, lined up as before. I throughly inspected it and there were no signs of cracks.
The right side plastic bed cover that it sat on had broken all mounting tabs. This probably saved it from cracking

I’ve got a BedRug and the right corner is so mashed I can’t pull it up. I wanted to look underneath but I’m gonna leave it as is.

I’ll make sure a proper alignment is done and hope no frame tweaking needed.

What determined the “totaled” in your case?

What determined the “totaled” in your case?
There is some complicated wiz-bang formula the adjuster uses. The insurance company decides if your vehicle is totaled, they compare the cost of repairing it to its current market value.

Here is how State Farm explained it to me. This is from a couple of years ago though…

Damage Assessment: An adjuster inspects the vehicle to calculate the total repair cost, including parts, labor, paint, and any supplemental hidden damage that might appear once repairs start. They also check for frame damage, airbag deployment, and whether the vehicle can be safely restored.

Actual Cash Value (ACV): The insurance company determines your vehicle’s ACV: what it was worth immediately before the accident. They use tools like Kelley Blue Book, NADA, or proprietary valuation systems that account for mileage, age, condition, options, and regional market demand.

Threshold or Formula: Each state (and insurance company) has its own rules. Total Loss Threshold (TLT): Some states set a percentage (e.g., 70%–80%). If the repair cost equals or exceeds that percentage of ACV, the vehicle is declared totaled. Total Loss Formula (TLF): In other states, they compare Repair Cost + Salvage Value against the ACV. If the sum is greater than or equal to ACV, it’s a total loss.

First step is to assess the damage. Since it’s the rear end (vs the front end where damage can add up quicker) my guess is they’ll repair it. Hopefully there isn’t any frame damage.

Excellent explanation. ☝

Being a new truck they’ll probably repair it. Hopefully I can live with that.
It’s my first accident since I was 16. That one was my fault and the only damages, besides my Datsun truck were mailboxes.

Pictures underneath at rear bumper. Corner of frame on R/H side bent. Trailer hitch absorbed a lot.
