Cold weather 10R80 transmission shift

We are finally getting some cold weather, and I noticed the way my transmission is shifting. Honestly, never watched it during summer, but just noticed it. Does the transmission shift from the first gear to the third gear, totally bypassing the second gear? Noticed the truck revs up to 1800-2000 rpm in the first gear and shifts straight to third gear. When coming to a stop, it shifts down from 3rd to 1st. Thereafter, the usual 3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10, and down shifts accordingly. Now, all this is happening from a cold start.

If you floor it, it will use 2nd. It will also use 2nd by default in 4L.

Sport mode you will see all gears also

It’s been doing that all along you just never noticed. That’s how this tranny works learns your driving habits and adjust to that.
It’s not a cold weather issue.

This is my first F150, and I bought just a few months ago. And no, I never noticed this. My wife noticed it and told me… so I looked for it and noticed it. Talking about the shifting from gear 1 to 3, does it mean I hit the gas harder than most folks?

Mine does that and I don’t step on it hard. If you watch there will be several gears missed. Nothing to worry about.

You have to use light throttle for it to skip 2nd. Step into it some and it won't do it. On cold mornings I notice the first 1-3 shift happens at higher rpm and gives a nice little kick in the butt. I like it. Mine never skipped any other gear besides 2nd.

There is a cold shift map that skips second up through 40% throttle. The normal shift map only skips second up through 17% throttle. The other skip shifts depend on what year model you have. I have a 24 and all of the other skip shifts are disabled.

That’s a relief to learn….. personally, I am not a techie, and couldn’t care less how the truck is designed …. As long as it’s doing what it’s designed for, I am good

Mine skips 3rd most of the time at light throttle. Give it some throttle and it will use 2nd. Totally normal.
