I have purchased a used 21 Lariat 3.5 ecoboost with 18,000 miles, I have put about 1500 of those miles since I purchased it. I noticed a loud ticking sound on cold starts usually in the morning. I checked the oil filter and it was a STP I heard that F150's should only use OEM filters, so I gave her a oil change with 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic and a OEM oil filter. It has greatly reduced the ticking sound but I still get it. Also my driveway is very steep, I noticed it seems better to back in instead of pulling in. Here is a short clip. A buddy told me it was ok that its just the lifters filling with oil.

Hi there! Can you send us a PM with your VIN and Ford dealership information? I’d be happy to look into this F-150 concern on my end.

I have both a 3.5 and a really steep driveway. My truck doesn’t sound like that on start up no matter if I pull in or back in.

Ok now I am getting worried, I contacted the dealer and they told me our 3.5 ecoboost doesn't use lifter's so it cant be that, he also said to try and park nose up as the oil pickup tube is in the back of the oil pan, he said if that doesn't help then to drop it off with them and see if they can reproduce it.

You may want to search ecoboost 3.5 engine ticking if you haven’t already, I think you may find a lot of information. Cam phasers if I recall correctly.

Parked on level ground no ticking on cold start, parked in my drive way nose up no ticking on cold start, but it hasn't been very cold, its been in the low 70's. Tomorrow should be in the 50's so we will see what happens then.

50 Degrees this morning and did a cold start nose up, it had the ticking noise for about a minute on the front passenger side of the engine for about a minute before it went away.

Truck has been at the Dealer for the past 3 days for some recalls and the ticking sound, I will be picking it up today, they are having issues trying to locate were the noise is coming from, they said I need to wait for it to get worse or for it to get cold again. :(

Well the ticking noise came back this morning, I haven't heard it all summer but today was the first cold mornings mid 50's. Lasted maybe 30 sec tried to use a mechanic stethoscope to find it, no such luck.

Hey there! I would be happy to assist with your noise concern. Can you send over a DM with your VIN and Ford dealer info?

I’m on my second 3.5 eco, and that my friend is not normal. Take it to a different dealer if you feel they’re not addressing the problem. Some dealership service departments are night and day from others. Good luck.

The other day my battery charge was low and the auto stop/start system wasn't working. I parked it after work like I normally do. Then the next day it was in the 50s I did my remote start with my ears waiting to hear the clattering of death but I heard a normal engine start. I was so surprised. Then I started to analyze what I did different, only thing I could think of was the Auto start/stop system was off. So for the next 5 days I have disabled my start stop system and every cold morning since I have not heard any noise!!

What normally happens is when I pull into my drive way and come to a stop the truck shuts off, then I put the truck right into park the truck starts then I push the button right away and shut off the truck I wonder if this whole stop, start and stop in the matter of a second is causing something to empty oil or depressurize the oil system, I don't know I am just happy to disable this feature and now enjoy my truck. Only time will tell.

I will keep the forum updated I do have a app at the dealership Monday the 28th.

This is my second 3.5 EB and I would take it to a different dealer. That noise is not normal. I had a 2011 3.5 that had a very, very slight tick and that was the fuel high pressure pump which was under sound proofing on the drivers side of the motor.
