My guess is that part of the reason for having them be plastic is so with too much of a load they break instead of damaging the backing piece. I don't intend to experiment with my truck and so making a frame out of 1" PVC pipe that is supported by the rear seat and held in place by the headrests.
The cost to make the PVC frame is about $60 in total with the cost of the materials and the cost to drive to the building supply store to buy them.
I only object to having to do this with a truck that cost me $66,000. That is why most of the trucks I have bought over the years have been from Toyota where I get what I need from the factory and do not need to make additions to fix deficiencies.
