I am old enough to remember when a dealership (Ford, GM, Dodge....) wanted to have enough goodwill with their customers that they'd say "Sure Frank. Let me see your keys and I'll get Bob to take care of that for you. Shouldn't be but a few minutes"

Man are those days a bygone era. :(
HA! Yes there was a time when a dealership would jump for joy at the opportunity to do some "good deed" for a customer. It takes almost no time, really costs them nothing, and buys thousands of dollars worth of good will. A simple gesture like this is an investment, let alone just a nice thing to do for a customer. Maybe help keep them loyal and return if they have a bigger money job.

I did not read all of these comments completely, but I think many are missing the point.
Tailgates come off pickups on a regular basis.
Any “dump run” I have ever done, tailgate comes OFF before unloading to prevent crap from bouncing back and damaging the exterior.
My current k1500 gets the gate removed at about every third outing for one reason or another. Gate for my 79 is currently in the garage closet.
One should be able to remove the gate and reinstall it whenever the fuck one wants it done without having to do unnecessary unrelated crap.
Honestly, I have not removed the gate on the F150 as the k1500 is still doing the dirty work, but I still take decent care of it ( and the gate is the only panel unmarred after 25 yrs of semi abuse.

I don't think there's any "rules", or any kind of suggestion from Ford that you shouldn't take your tailgate off your truck.

To be fair, this is the first time in over 10 years I've had an issue with my dealer. They are normally great. This is (I belive) a new service manager and she's a hard ass. My wife had oil changed, tires rotated, and recall work done and when we drove off one of the tires would not report on the TPMS. the Service Manager said it was no way their fault because all they did was rotate the tires not mess with the stems. This is after it worked prior to them working on it and not working immediately after.

Now it's "we only have one laptop with IDS/FDRS and it's tied up with other vehicles."

Thankful that Forscan exists and I can get my own license for FDRS. I should only need dealer for mechanical issues that I know I can trust old school mechanics to fix.

Agreed!

Customer access to Forscan & FDRS (and the forum gurus) are gamechangers in the Ford ownership experience for some of us. Ironically it returns the "shade tree" back to the owner at a time when it's the professionals that are having trouble servicing the product. It's kinda crazy when you think about it.

Why isn't anyone questioning that for all intents and purposes YOU CAN NOT REMOVE your tailgate. If you do, you need to pay Ford. That's BS. Removing the tailgate is just something you do with a truck being used for truck things. It's fine that the camera needs recalibrated. The recalibration should be something the end user can do without paying one red cent.

I thought it was mentioned that removing tailgate causing camera issues is a "software bug" that was corrected?

I've never needed to remove my tailgate but I would be just as pissed as OP if it suddenly caused issues for me.

Frank. here is the Technical Service Bulletin you need, 23-2040, you will notice one of the items listed is "Reverse Brake Assist Not Available". The dealer did this for me under warranty, the tailgate removal by Linex was a pure coincidence. I do not believe your tailgate removal has anything to do with your problem.

Looks like that involves dealer getting paid to do a software update. That is a rare thing.

Same thing happened to my truck when I had the bedliner sprayed in October 2021. I can't believe Ford hasn't fixed this since then.

In my case, the dealer's contractor sprayed the liner, so eventually it was corrected at no expense to me. But it took 2 additional trips to the dealer, and the dealer lying over and over telling me "it's normal" and "you have the backup assist turned off", turning all the assist nannies off before I picked it up hoping I wouldn't see the message, and then not doing the last step in the TSB that I handed to them, causing me to have to go back once again.

OK, now I remember why I hate that dealership so much.

recalibrating the 360 camera system isn’t easy as just utilizing Forscan folks.. there’s more to it
