Brake Hold

I have it on my EcoBoost and I love it. I know it's also on a bunch of other Ford models, but on most of them there's a button to control it. I smashed up my right foot a while back and it still hurts to press the brake for long traffic lights, so having brake hold is amazing.

The biggest issue I have with it is it largely disables the ability to creep forward by releasing the brakes slightly.

Just curious, those of you who don't trust AUTO HOLD, I suppose you don't trust the adaptive cruise control to stop and hold your truck either. It uses the same system.

For me it's not an issue of trust, I know it will hold the vehicle in place; I just find it irritating when the vehicle doesn't start forward when I release my foot from the brake. I think that comes from 50 years of driving without auto hold. I use adaptive cruise all the time and think it is a terrific innovation.

I trust all of these systems but within some limit. But the truck unexpectedly creeping forward a few inches while on auto-hold does not exactly inspire confidence. Once you experience it, you'll change your tune.

As I sit in this Chick Fil A drive thru making great use of auto hold, I’m thinking about something I’ve been curious about for a while. I turned auto hold on when I bought the truck and haven’t turned it off since, save for seeing if the creep at a stop was related to auto hold or not.

While I was doing that - I realized something. The electric motor whine (not the pedestrian speaker, the actual whine of the electric motor running) doesn’t stop when I don’t use auto hold!

My curiosity is this: is the truck always spinning the electric motor in drive with auto hold off to simulate a running engine into the torque converter, enabling a very natural creep? If auto hold changes this fact - then there could be an efficiency bonus for using auto hold, since the electric motor is shut down when auto hold is engaged, and restarts when I tap the throttle to move. Anyone else notice this?

Oh craps...now i'm going to have to start using it 'cuz you gave me a reason (though I doubt the "efficiency bonus" would be perceptible if you actually tried to measure it)! ?
