I'm still looking at replacing the front and rear bumpers with some heavy steel ones. Just want some mass in the impact area to lessen the risk of my own frame damage, and I'm ok with the MPG hit. After a certain speed collision though, it's not going to matter.

It’s all good until you slam your shin on it. Then you won’t be happy
When I leave the hitch inserted in the receiver I always drop the tailgate to avoid the shin thing. I always learn the hard way.

If you get hit hard enough to bend that class V hitch, having the shank in it won't make any difference, in my personal case, that shank has been the savior of a couple different vehicles I've owned over the years, once at a red light and another in a drive thru.

Both would have caused significant damage (cosmetic mostly) had it not been inserted in the receiver. In both cases I came away with no damage and the offenders had enough damage to make them pay attention to what they're doing next time to prevent it happening again. I call it an "Old schooler" or as the kids these days like to say, "FAFO" get too close to me (FA), wind up hitting me, (FO).
This is 100% my thinking. Im looking for cosmetic protection against someones foot slipping off the brake at a stop light, or going through a merge when Im still waiting in front of them, etc. I know its not going to help in a legitimate impact
