If you get hit hard enough to bend that class V hitch, having the shank in it won't make any difference, in my personal case, that shank has been the savior of a couple different vehicles I've owned over the years, once at a red light and another in a drive thru.Focusing all of the force into your trailer hitch is a GREAT way to bend your frame, requiring frame straightening or totalling your vehicle. The bumper is there to spread the force out.
Both would have caused significant damage (cosmetic mostly) had it not been inserted in the receiver. In both cases I came away with no damage and the offenders had enough damage to make them pay attention to what they're doing next time to prevent it happening again. I call it an "Old schooler" or as the kids these days like to say, "FAFO" get too close to me (FA), wind up hitting me, (FO).
