Update:

After a bit of back and forth with Ford Customer Care they agreed to pay $1820.00 of $1936.00 owed for the repair.

I’m grateful for the outcome and it’s come at a cost of not having my truck for a month and a half, getting turned away from an absolutely terrible tone def main market Ford dealer for my area. Capital Ford in Wilmington, NC can flat out pound sand and at the time of two amazing guys on this thread to help me along the way.

I haven’t had a battle like this in a long time and it’s small potatoes in the grand scheme but still a hell of a fight!

My unqualified advice is IF YOU’RE OUT OF WARRANTY TURN YOUR AUTO UPDATE OFF!

Do independent mechanics even have the test equipment to do any of the computer software loads and testing after the module's install?
Should just need FDRS for any programming etc.

I have an extended warranty but this is all very frightening. The fact that they can remotely brick the truck and take so long and cost so much effort to fix it is amazing to me. The incompetence of the first dealer is not.

To my knowledge this is one of a small number of threads where damage to the truck is blamed on an OTA. There are a bunch of checks and tests to avoid installing bad software on these trucks. What happened with OP is unlikely to happen to anyone else. Just bad luck with it but seems Ford is making it right.

There have been some other issues with updates and incompatibility killing headlight modules but I can't recall if that was OTA or people forcing it in FDRS.

Fair enough, I’m happy to be convinced back into receiving OTA updates automatically. Want to emphasize my suggestion is unqualified.

And yes, a month and a half aside, Ford is making it right. Same as goes with everything, I fought tooth and nail to get to that point… I don’t want to suggest the illusion of ease one bit - zero exaggeration here.
