4/12/24: I get an auto sw update specifically for gateway module
- that same day my truck won't start
- I disconnect battery for 20 min reset and it fires right up
- I have an appt for 5/2 to fix recall for wiper blades
- it dies in a parking lot on 5/1 so I have it towed to local Ford dealer

They call me today to tell me the ABS module is shot and the repair is $2400 but can offer no clarity as to what actually happened to the ABS for it to be fried . . . FRIED.

2021 Ford with 42k miles on it so 6k outside warranty

Everyone seems to gloss over the fact that my truck died the same day they pushed the module sw and I called so it's on file.

I have Ford tech team involved but I've never been more infuriated at a vehicle situation in my life. If they hadn't pushed a sw update - you'd be hearing nothing from me but the fact they won't acknowledge it really irritates me.

I had Ford tech team elevate it to next level and will get a call in 24 to 48 hours.

My unqualified advice is turn your auto updates off.

I'll keep you posted - wondering if anyone else has had a bad sw update.

It's weird you posted this. As just today I received an update and was thinking that once my truck gets close to end of warranty I will be turning off the updates just to try and avoid a situation like this.
I hope that they get it sorted out for you.

@Ford Motor Company broke your truck w/ an update they decided to deploy and they expect you to foot the bill? I'd be talking with attorneys on that one.

Thanks for tagging them. I am absolutely preparing for legal pursuit. I had to request Ford tech to send me an email stating they told me there’s nothing they can do to match the email from Ford dealer stating they don’t know what happened but I will absolutely make both of them recognize there was a SW push for gateway module and they can’t determine if it did or did not cause the issue. What a way to treat a customer - I’m genuinely shocked.

I’m not on a smudge campaign but I will be sharing my experience and won’t have to embellish one bit as the black and white of it is disturbing enough. I don’t want anyone to deal with this.

They didn’t hesitate to send me a trade up offer - promise you it will be the last Ford for a long time if I end up in that scenario.

Vent over - thanks again for the tag!

Reading your dates it looks like the module died a couple weeks after the update. Did you havr any other issues with the software update after the reset? Not saying you are wrong, but there are other possibilities with that time gap.

On the other hand, that much cash for a module is robbery.

Good point on the time gap and yes I dealt with sporadic cycles of starting the truck and it running through a cycle of system errors but was able to start it and once started it operated without incident.

The reason for the gap was I already had an appt. set for 5/2 for wiper recall and getting an appt with my local dealership has consistently a 2 week book out for appointments. I dealt with the issues with the mindset of limping it to the 5/2 appt. It dies on 5/1.

I called Ford tech on the date of first incident 4/12 where they didn’t disclose much other than they can tow it and Ford will get to it when they can but if the fault is my own the tow will be at my cost.

I called Ford tech back on the 4/27 to get more info leading up to my 5/2 to provide as much context as possible and gathered the following bulletins.

22-2214
24-2039
51226 fsn

I have no clue on their relevancy but that’s what I was passed.

The bottom line to me is they passed a sw update and my truck was never the same and now I’m holding the bag for it.

^ emotions aside - I’m open to hearing it if anyone thinks I’m being irrational.

I checked for anything related but only found wiper recall.

What’s your curiosity? Thanks for the interest either way.

If I have end of having to foot the bill I made find an independent mechanic … I’d prefer my money to go to someone else that has no idea what happened but can fix it.

Do independent mechanics even have the test equipment to do any of the computer software loads and testing after the module's install?

Probably not. Even if you could a 3rd party you’d have to get a dealer to program it more than likely… had a buddy get one and that was his path.
