Bad smell when wet

2021 F150 horrible smell when wet. I know what it is, the mesh wind deflector in the sun roof. Has anyone been successfully in getting Ford to rectify this issue? So far I have not. If you are experiencing this issue LMK. If you want to test it, open your sunroof when everything is nice and dry carefully wet it and it bam it will hit you like a Mac truck almost instantly. I didn’t have any issues until my truck was about a year old so like other threads I’m thinking it’s mold. Everything is perfectly fine when it’s dry. I tried to clean it real good and it helped a bit but I still smell it when it gets wet.

An expert would not use the term “black mold”. ”Black mold” is analogous to “assault weapon”. Point being, you can use a hammer to assault someone; however, the media wants you to believe it’s an AR15. The media coined the phrase “black mold” in a Dateline NBC special back in 1999 about a homeowner in Dripping Springs, Tx whose house was covered in mold. The reason the term is incorrect is that there are many species of mold that are black that DON’T put out mycotoxins, just as there are plenty of species that aren’t black that DO release mycotoxins. Specifically, the “black mold” they are referring to is stachybotrys.

I too believe you have a mold issue. Mold needs 3 things to grow (water, temperature, and food source). Sounds like the mesh is getting wet (water), the temperature is there as well, and the food source is the mesh itself. Take away any 1 of the 3 and mold can’t grow. You obviously can’t remove the temp, nor the mesh (permanently), so that just leaves the water. Apparently you have water thats getting to the mesh and it’s unable to dry within the 48-72 hours it takes mold to grow. This could be due to a leak or where you live (high humidity climate).

Your solution is 1. Fix Water intrusion AND 2. Replace mesh. The mesh has to be replaced for sure and CANNOT be cleaned well enough to remove hyphae and rhizoids that are well into the fabric themselves. Basically, they are the roots.

Mold is a natural part of our daily life. The news will even tell you the spore counts during allergy season. Your clothes are literally covered in mold spores right now if you’ve been outside. Now, because some molds have mycotoxin, those species ( “can” not “will”) have harmful effects whether you have allergies or not. The molds that release mycotoxins such as stachybotrys are primarily found on building/construction materials. Because the food source in your situation is the mesh is why I think it’s very probable to be stachybotrys.

Back to the Dateline Dripping Springs show…….the wife sued her insurance company, State Farm, for $10’s of millions and said her husband was basically retarded from exposure and lost his job, kids were failing out of school, and yada, yada, yada…..none of the medical affects were admissible in court because it drastically effects people differently. For me, I have bad allergies that get worse every year that goes by. Exposure to Penicillium Aspergillus (no mycotoxin) will send my allergies into overdrive and give me a headache for the rest of the day.

Should you be worried? Doubt it. Does it need to be addressed? Without a doubt it does!

This is a known and common problem. If memory serves me right, all they're going to do is replace the 'gutter' with the same faulty part. This guy finally found it and plan to do it myself. Its a relatively easy fix. Unacceptable for $70,000 truck, but fixable. What isn't...the f@&king moldy smell from the AC vents on a vehicle less than a year old. @Ford Motor Company

Hmmm, I wonder if that is the reason why the PO took that wind deflector off before I got the truck. I just got a replacement but now second guessing whether I want to even put it on.
