If I don’t want my turbos kicking in I will just down shift. If I lock out gears in auto mode it will not hit them, you can up shift in auto mode and it will go into locked out gears. For example driving thru some mountain pass I will lock out 9&10. Hit a long flat stretch I will bump it in 9,10 then it’s no longer locked out.
It’s just like using the old school auto trans. You can bump down or up gears.

OK, just as it is supposed to operate. But you indicated that you could shift up or down in D (auto, as you refer to it). Locking out gear so they are not available isn't the same as being 6th gear and hitting the "-" to downshift to 5th then hitting the "+" to go back to 6th...actual manual shifting...which is what you get in M.

Yes you can. Doesn’t have to be in manual mode. I can lock out gears be in auto and manually up shift to that gear in auto mode. It will not do it automatically. Play with your transmission and there’s a lot you can learn.

But thats not an upshift. That's removing the lock your previously placed on a higher gear. My whole point: you need to have locked out all higher gears down to the ones you're playing with. What am I not understanding here?

It sounds like the programming is forcing higher rpms to enable more aggressive cooling, possibly of the transmission.
