Ford designed their CD solution in-house and it is very good.

GM and Stellantis used 3rd parties to design theirs. Nothing but problems, especially GM.

I have had GM trucks for years but my company trucks were Ford. The company I worked for got some GM trucks for the CD and were very sorry. The last gas GM I bought for my self was a 2004 5.3 and drove it until 2023 with no problems. Seeing the issues with GM I traded my Chevy in on the 5.0 in 23 and will never go back to a gas v-8 GM truck. That said, my 2018 Denali Duramax is great. “Except for the def under the hood. My 03 6.0 Ford almost ruined me on Ford diesel trucks but all my kids and brothers have the 6.7 they seem to be very happy. The next major body change and when they get the 10 speed automatic worked out I’ll probably buy an F-250 super crew to get the 8’ bed. BTW I love the 5.0. Wouldn’t trade it for anything on the market in a half ton.

Quick question and hopefully not a dumb one.

How do you know when it’s running on 4? I haven’t noticed any indications.

My ‘25 has 13,000 miles now and I’ve been very happy with the mileage and power.

If you can’t tell then it’s a good thing.

Not sure what Cerberus/Fiat Chrysler/Whoever did for theirs, but GM's solution was in-house during it's first iteration as AFM and when they adopted the Delphi skip-fire tech into DFM there were still a lot of GM people at Delphi even though they were technically spun off. The DFM stuff is rock solid post 2022 but before that I'd avoid it personally.

Dealer found an issue with my truck while scanning codes for something else.
i had no idea something was wrong and no CEL. Took the truck in for a completely unrelated electrical gremlin. (I think A-S-S)
this was when the truck was still pretty new (21 XLT).
No problems since except for the A-S-S which was eventually turned off with ForScan.
nearly 60,000 miles and a 20mpg lifetime average.
i have seen instantaneous mpg as high as 25 on flat ground below 60, so pretty sure it is working just fine

I got mine turned off with a tune since it was pretty new at the time and after having GM's I didn't want to risk anything, but whenever I've run it stock, I wouldn't be able to tell you when it's active, and I don't recall reading about anyone having issues with it either.

Does anyone have the YouTube video showing how Ford system works compared to GM/Fiat system? There was a really good video explaining how it works and is different but I can't find it

The GM and Mopar versions aren't really much alike at all. Vaguely similar lifter mechanism yes, but very different in strategy and actuation. The Ford implementation is closer to the Mopar version where it's a simple on/off for those 4 cylinders. GM operates sort of like a 0 cylinder engine and rolls in cylinders depending on torque demand. AFAIK the Ford mechanism is the same as any other DOHC engine with cylinder deactivation with the latch being in the roller follower.

2021 XLT Screw 5.0,4x4,302Asport,
None at all! I am so glad I was proven wrong from my hesitancy back when this first was being discussed. The way I look at it is these trucks have been on the road since 2020 since the model year typically debuts the year before in actuality. So heading into over half a decade on the road, with no known issues that I've ever seen.

I got over 27 MPG hand calculated in my 2024 5.0 SuperCrew two-wheel drive XL with 3.31 gears last month. 1900 mi trip from NC to Mass and back through the mountain route of i-81.. You're not getting that without cylinder deactivation. I was able to keep the truck in 4 cylinder mode for so much of the trip due to steady, smart driving and reaped the benefits.

I'm a huge fan of the cylinder deactivation in these trucks when in the past I was probably one of the biggest critics you'd find. I feel the same way towards the digital dash. Heading into 6 years of digital dashes and you don't see widespread issues.

My best, taking almost the same route from Greenville SC to Boston is 25.8, hand calculated, not vehicle calculated. That was loaded with stuff in the bed and in the cab. Pretty much sticking to speed limits on I85-77-81-78-287-684-84-90.
Ford's CD works perfectly. Sadly most of my interstate driving now involves towing. So chances of seeing that mpg again are remote.
