Android Auto (AA) Question

I haven't tried to get AA to start without plugging it in for awhile because I've had issues with it working. So by default if I want AA, I plug the phone into the jack in the storage area under the radio. (using the plug in the arm rest storage just charges for me).
Anyway, I'm trying to get the voice commands in AA to work while I'm driving. I know it's turned on in the phone settings and when I say Hey Google, it turns on for a second then turns off (won't acknowledge voice commands).

Any ideas, suggestions?
