I've been boondocking since Wednesday night (it's now Sunday) and I noticed on Friday that my truck sounded a little weird while acting as a generator.

As I walked to the driver's door I noticed the grill shutters were partially opened even though it was only 45° or so outside. Once I got inside the truck I noticed the Outside Air Temp (OAT) gauge was reading 27°. Also, the coolant and transmission temps were both around 200°. "Normal" indications are around 145° coolant and 120° trans while stationary as a generator.

I pulled up my OBDLink app and scanned for codes and there were a TON but no CEL on the dash. I hadn't scanned for ALL codes before, so I figured not all of them were recent.

I turned the truck off, opened the door, let everything power down and turned the truck back on. OAT still not updating. I tried unhooking the 12v battery. No dice.

So, I unhooked the trailer from the truck and took it for a trip around the country block. Once I got up to about 45mph the OAT started updating.

I hooked everything back up and continued on with my day.

Saturday I turned the truck off for about an hour, giving it a chance to FULLY shut down. I checked in the afternoon and the OAT was reading 34° even though it was 53° outside. So the OAT is getting "stuck" for some reason.

What's the deal?

>Update: this morning is 39° and the truck is still reading 34.

Camping last summer I had an episode similar to what you’re describing. It was in generator mode for about 24hrs.
I also had my hvac seized up throwing heat and it was 85* out when leaving the camp site. My temp set to low. I had to reset the truck a few times for it to stop.

I turned the AC on, also, and it blew warm even on manual settings. Once I took it around the block it started acting right, too.

I read the posts the day they were made. Honestly, I don't have a clue what determines the OAT refresh.

I find it interesting that driving the truck eventually triggered a refresh.
I also am surprised that in generator mode you don't normally see ECT's reach the 186-200F range after a few cycles. Especially with the current PCM software that to me appears to have influenced a lag in charging the HVB until ECT's reach near normal operating temps.

Thanks for the reply. I hesitated tagging you but you always seem to have the most experience on this stuff.

When I left the fairgrounds on Sunday the OAT was stuck at 34°. Once I got to about 30mph it started refreshing, this time.

I've never noticed my ECTs getting too high, but I have ran as generator a LOT in colder weather. Like, +/- 10° from freezing, so I imagine it stays a little cooler. The shutters stay pretty much closed the entire time to keep heat IN.
