Not sure if anyone has tried this but on the dashboard of trucks without the 18 speakers unleashed package, are the corners still setup to accept 3.5" mid range speakers and then just replace the defroster grille with the 18 speakers grille? $150 seems like a fraction of the $1500 3 way pillar setup although I understand the speaker position will make a difference. Goal is to get some like the Focal 3 way Access setup up front on a budget since amps, dsp, and zen box or other interface harness will add up.

Currently have: ML3Z-15044E82-AA
Replace with: ML3Z-15044E82-BB

Thanks!

Just did it in mine. I added 3” mids had to trim a little, make some speaker plates and had to heat the ac duct on passenger side to clear the magnet. I used a heat gun directed into the duck from the passenger vent (remove the actual vent) then when it was soft I pushed it in with a spoon and let it cool. (Some pics of that included)
Speakers Blam FRS.3N50 spec sheet is included so you can see the size of the speaker. Some pics of before and after and during trimming. I took off the top dash pads so I wouldn’t accidentally cut them and to gain a little extra room. I used an oscillating DeWalt multi tool. ( put a thin hard sheet of material to protect the windshield glass so you don’t break it) I had to remake the mounting plates out of 1/8” material (1/8” abs sheet) and pull off the grilles to get enough clearance for the dash grill to sit flat. I am happy with the results. Sounds amazing! Really adds a lot of mids and highs.

I'm considering doing a 3" in the dash as well. Did you measure how much depth you had to work with before reshaping the vent? Looking at your pics, it seems it was a close fit before reshaping, like it was hitting just the edge. Is that correct? Trying to see what I can fit.

I did not measure as it’s very difficult area to work in with the windshield angle and not much room to work. However you are correct it was a very small amount that needed cut out. I would say the speaker only needed to go down about 3/16”. I trimmed out a little extra to give a little room so that nothing had a chance to touch and create a vibration. If you could find a 2” midrange or a shallower 3” you might not have to cut anything. Or maybe a Neo 3” with a smaller magnet.

Plenty of speakers fit the dash without trimming or re-shaping the duct work.

Blam lfr-52 is a common one I do if the mid-bass can meet it around 500hz. If I use a midbass that struggles past 350, I'll use a 3" (80mm)
